Mobile Ad Hoc NETwork
(MANET)
Single Hop
Direct Communication
Should be in the range
of base-station

Multi-Hop
Communicates using in-between nodes
Should be in the range of any node

Why not TCP
Packet losses due to
Congestion
Link failure
Caching and propagation of stale information
Dynamic add/delete of nodes not feasible
Router uses stale information

Characteristics of MANET

No centralized server
No wires or cabling i.e. Cheap Installation.
Autonomous operation possible (Stand alone).
Relatively Low capacity (MBPS).
Dynamic topology (Due to movement or
entering sleep mode)
Rely on batteries for energy (Power-constraint)
Limited physical security

Conclusion
Mobile ad hoc network can be connected to larger network.
It can be used as privately also. As far as private is considered we
can set our private network using MANET in our office or campus.
It is not clear that any particular algorithm or class of algorithm is the
best for all scenarios.
Each protocol has definite advantages and disadvantages.
The field of ad hoc mobile networks is rapidly growing and changing.
It is likely that such networks will see widespread use within the next
few years.
