Comprehension Strategies
When we were at school, we were given a passage to read, then
asked a series of questions. We had to respond to those questions in
full sentences
Where we ever taught to comprehend the written word?
Now we a range of comprehension strategies. We focus on the
strategies suggested by the National Reading Panel Report (2000)
and research conducted by Duke and Pearson(2002.

With this in mind

It is important that we see each student as an
individual. At Moonee Ponds Primary School, in
year 3/4 in 2015 we have a varying level of
abilities across a number of key focus areas.
Some kids are great with numbers, some can
classify, some are very spatially aware and
some know their shapes.
No matter what they need improvement in it
will without doubt relate to applying the
problem solving strategies.

- Our goal is to achieve movement in

mathematics by supporting, reinforcing
and extending those individuals at the
level they require by giving them a
familiarity of the steps to solving
problems.

We call it the Mathematicians

Toolbox.
It is a number of strategies that the
students become familiar with so that
they can solve the problems that they
come across both at school when focusing
on mathematical thinking and in the real
world.

We have recently developed a scope and

sequence for explicitly teaching the
strategies as they become relative to their
mathematical thinking. The reason we
created the sequence was so that we could
follow in the Australian Curriculum where
the students were applying these
strategies. The document looks like this...

Why are we bringing this up

here?
Because all of the skills that
your child learns in the
classroom can be applied to home
life. It is great for kids to
learn new things but when they
are applying them to real life
situations their experiences are
deepened and more meaningful. As

In 2013 and 2014 students in various classrooms used HOTmaths, a webbased learning program that integrates home and school learning via the
internet.Students had access to revision and practice for Maths topics
studied in the classroom. Teachers were able to assign specific
activities for students to complete in class or at home, but most
importantly students were able to review and revise learned concepts
themselves by regularly logging in and finding topics they needed to
practise.
In 2015 ALL students from Years 3 to Year 6 have paid a small
subscription through their booklist to gain access both at school and at
home. It is an easy to operate site and we will be running tutorials in
the classroom so that students feel confident when first visiting and
attempting tasks. Don't be too concerned if your child finds the initial
pages or online tasks difficult. It is not expected that students will be
able to complete every question from week one.
We have taken on HOTmaths as a school initiative in 2015 as it is an
explicit learning program that not only challenges students but supports
them to progress their understanding in alignment with the Australian
Curriculum standards. With the practice and reinforcement that this web
program offers we can encourage students to take their new found learning
to an integrated technology platform. Kids love ICT so what better way to
engage them

to the Numeracy, Literacy or any other
school driven programs at Moonee Ponds
Primary School, please feel free to

Thanks for coming along tonight and

once again a BIG welcome to you and
your students as we embark on a year
of endless inquiry and learning.
