THE EARTHS HYDROSPHERE

The vast sphere of water on Earth.
From outer space, Earth appears to be blue because 70% of its
surface is water.
Water is essential to life. Deprived of water, humans would die
within a week.
Water affects the weather.
However, despite its significance, we often take water
for granted. We seldom think about where it comes
from, how long its supply will last. What makes water
a very special solvent.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE THE EARTHS HYDROSPHERE

THE WATER CYCLE

The water cycle, also called hydrologic cycle, continuously makes
available this essential. Water is a renewable resource because its
supply seems to be easily replenish.

Transpiration
Evaporation
Condensation
Precipitation

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Understanding the Earth

Water evaporates from the bodies of water such as oceans, seas,

and lakes. It also evaporates from plants and the clothes that we hang to
dry. When we perspire, water that evaporates from our skin has a
cooling effect. We do not see water vapor in the atmosphere, but we
can see steam. Water becomes fog or cloud as the molecules collect
and condense.
Water molecules that evaporate from oceans, land, plants, and other
sources through evaporation and transpiration (for plants) accumulate in
the atmosphere and condense to form different types of cloud. Dark
clouds that are heavy with water are called Nimbus Clouds. Nimbus
clouds deliver rainwater to the Earths surface through precipitation.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE THE EARTHS HYDROSPHERE

Rainwater is distributed through different ways, such as infiltration,

percolation, absorption, and runoff. Rainwater may be also be absorbed
by plants from their roots and distribute this to stem and leaves of plants
through capillary action.
In filtration is the process by which water enters the soil.
In percolation, water moves down further into the soil and
permeable rocks until it reaches the aquifer or the ground water storage
area.
Water has the potential to be renewed if it is not polluted, wasted,
or depleted
It means that water, particularly freshwater, has a potential to become
nonrenewable resource if people continue to use it beyond its
sustainable yield.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Introduction

SOURCES OF WATER
Water may be available as surface water or groundwater. Water
in the rivers, lakes, and seas is considered surface water. The water
below the ground through the permeable rocks makes up ground
water.
Groundwater flows through permeable rock materials called
aquifers. Impermeable rock materials found underground are called
aquitards.
Groundwater is the major source of fresh water in the
Philippines and in other parts of the world.
