Cisco VoIP migration &

deployment

PRESENTED BY: ARSHDEEP S. ARORA

Network Refresh Objective:

The University of Maryland, College Park has
embarked on a five-year project to upgrade and
refresh the campus network. At the beginning of the
project, 70 percent of the network equipment was
categorized as obsolete and about 80 percent of
campus buildings were cabled with wiring that did
not support modern network speeds. The outdated
equipment also did not support Voice over Internet
Protocol (VoIP) technology, and, more importantly,
new services mandated by state auditors required
upgrade to new equipment to enhance the security
of the university's network and critical applications.
Included in the security aspects of the project are
wired network authentication, firewall service for
university departments, intrusion prevention, and
potentially, installation of equipment mandated by
the Communications Assistance for Law
Enforcement Act

Migration
Issue

Product
Requirement:
Avaya end-of-life situation has resulted the university to consider alternative

solutions.

University need low-risk, evolutionary solutions.

Solution must work with existing Avaya systems.

Integration with other tools and processes (directories, e-mail, mobile devices etc.) is
also required.

Reliability

High Up time, High availability infrastructure.

Emergency responder system.

Reliable web classroom environment.

Quality of Service

High grade of service.

Better call coverage paths , efficient call routing , Single number reach , Mobile voice
access.

Product Requirement(contd.):

Scalability

Must be able to support more than 15000 end points(campus requirement).

Future Remote site deployment.

Integration with SIP provider(3-4 years down the line).

Federation deployment.

Security

Every packet should be encrypted and can not be compromised.

Secure RTP (SRTP) support.

Integration of IPSEC with Unified Communication(SIP security profile).

Migration Issues:

It is a step by step process. As operations can not be disturbed.

It requires planning and coordination across the organization.

Migration should minimize short term and long term impact to users.

You build stuff and you break stuff.

Site roll over/cut over process.

End user acceptance and education.

Training the help desk with the new procedures.

Training the existing technical staff with new technology.

Budget constraints.
