Definition
Gamma rays is an electromagnetic waves
that have the highest frequency. It is formed
from the atom radioactive substances that
have increasing or decreasing of electron so it
doesnt have charge. This wave has a great
energy that can penetrate metal and
concrete.

Discovery of Gamma Rays

The discovery of gamma-ray
radiation started from the discovery
by French scientists, Paul Ulrich
Villard in the 1900's. When he
research uranium that belong to
radioactive substance, he found rays
which have bigger perforated energy
than other radioactive rays, alpha
and beta rays. In 1903, Ernest
Rutherford proposed to call Villard's
rays as gamma rays

Electromagnetic

o Wavelength
o Frequency

: 10-11 - 10-14 meter

: 1020 - 1025 Hz

0 No charge
0 It can not be deflected by magnetic fields

How Gamma-Ray
Produced

Gamma-ray is produced from

radioactive
elements.
Radioactive materials are
materials that can emit
energy . Alpha rays, beta
rays, and gamma rays are
include to radioactive rays.
Gamma-ray can occur in all
the elements. To create an
element become radioactive,
first
is
deacrease
the
balanceness from the cores
component.

Different of , , and
Rays

rays
more
dangerous than and
light. Because light
only
can
penetrate
paper thin, and light
only can penetrate a
few millimeters of air.
rays : positive charge
rays : negative
charge
rays : neutral charge

Dangers of Gamma-Ray
Gamma rays can provide remarkable impact on
health, such as:
0 Can cause cancer, such as skin cancer and bone or
blood cancer (leukimia)
0
Damage to body tissue
0 Can cause infertility
0 Increased heart rate

Application
0 Medicine

Gamma rays are used in medicine to kill and

treat certain types of cancers and tumors, and
sterilization of hospital equipment. Example :
Gamma knife
0 Industry

Gamma rays are often used in the food

production for sterilization

Gamma Knife
Gamma Knife is a method of
gamma-ray therapy (radiosurgery)
used for the treatment of tumors,
cancer and other abnormalities in
the brain without opening the skull.
Gamma-rays
here
are
electromagnetic waves produced
from 200 radiation source Co-60
that can be focused with computer
to the specific area that contain
cancer or tumor. Gamma radiation
is used to destroy the cells or
diseased tissue damage while
keeping other cells healthy

Any
question ?

CONCLUSION
Gamma-ray is an electromagnetic
waves which have the shortest
wavelenght and the highest frequency.
Although it has a danger but it also
has the advantages. Gamma rays are
used in industries and medical such as
medical equipment sterilization, tumor
treatment and sterilization of food
