Data Center Virtualization

WHAT IS DATA CENTER VIRTUALIZATION?

9

It is the conversion of hardware devices into

software resources
The virtual h/w is actually just s/w running within
something called a hypervisor
Its job is to enable multiple VM to share access to the
same h/w without even being aware of each other.
Advantages:

Save money on power

Save money on cooling
Save money on capital expenses
Save money on management costs.

WHY WE NEED DCV

10

Now-a-Days, the IT departments are pressurized to

reduce their cost, by facing the following challenges

Availability
Scalability
Optimization
Management

DCV helps to overcome these challenges by

vCenter Operation Manager

vCenter Configuration Manager
vCenter Site Recovery Manager

WHAT IS VIRTUAL MACHINE?

12

Virtual hardware is really a software

Advantages:

The ability to replace and upgrade components of the virtual

hardware on the fly.
Virtual hardware also allows us to add new hardware devices such as
network cards & Processors, without re-booting the VM.
Ultimately, virtual hardware can help reduce your downtime because
you dont need to reboot your VMs everytime you wish to upgrade
their capabilities.
Through vSphere Web Client, we can remotely control virtual
machine, such as

Install softwares
Do advanced operations such as Cloning & Snapshots

VMWARE DATA CENTER SOFTWARES

13

The Hypervisor: is a resource traffic cop.

Its job is to provide virtual machines with their virtual

hardware as well as provide the appropriate share of physical

resources to the VM as defined by the VMs administrator.

ESXi Hypervisor
15

It is a bare-metal hypervisor, which means that it

performs the role of resource management while

enjoying direct access to the underlying physical
hardware.
This can improve your resource .
ESXi is commonly installed directly on hard drives in
your physical server, but it can also be installed onto
flash drives, SD cards & USB drives.
Through ESXi host, we can create new VM, adjust
their configuration files, monitor performance &
even control the virtual machine OS remotely.

vCenter
17

It is an advanced management suite that provides

tools & features that make virtualization a natural

extension of data center management.
A single vCenter server can scale from managing a
single ESXi host, all the way upto 1000 ESXi hosts.
It can also manage upto 10,000 powered-on virtual
machine.
It is a centralized platform for management fetures:
