Reclosing &
Sectionalising

What is a Recloser?
A Recloser is:
a protection device for overhead power lines
a circuit breaker designed to automatically recloseA onto a fault
capable of breaking fault current
a combination of switchgear, RTUB and a protection relay
a way of reducing manual intervention for transient faults
designed to measure both current and voltage in the switchgear
a programmable protection relay

Up to 4 times

RTU: Remote Terminal Unit

8

What is a Sectionaliser?
An Automated Sectionaliser is:
often used in conjunction with a recloser
designed to trip during the dead-timeA of an up-stream recloser
not rated to break fault current
a combination of switchgear, RTUB and a detection relay
a way of automatically isolating permanent faults
designed to measure both current and voltage in the switchgear
a programmable detection relay

Deadtime: the time between recloser trip

& close when there is no load on the circuit
A

RTU: Remote Terminal Unit

What is a Load Break Switch?

A Manual Load Break Switch is:
able to make or break rated load current
manually operated using a hookstick, mid-pole or down-pole accessory
a way of energising or deenergising non-faulted line segments
not rated to break fault current

10

Reclosers & Sectionalisers why?

Automatic Sectionalising Logic

When a RL-Series is configured as a sectionaliser (Sectionaliser setting
is Auto), it will count each operation of an upstream recloser (current
drops to zero, source-side voltage lost) only when it also detects a
downstream fault.
The sectionaliser is designed to open (trip) during the deadtimeA of the
upstream recloser the sectionaliser Trip after Supply Interrupts setting
should always be set at 1 less (max. 3) than the upstream recloser
Trips to Lockout setting (max. 4)
If the recloser Trips to Lockout fail to clear the fault, the sectionaliser
will open (trip) during the reclosers deadtimeA after trip 3.
The next automatic reclose (trip 4) will be successful as the faulted
section of the feeder will now been disconnected by the sectionaliser.

Deadtime: the time between recloser trip & close when there is no load on the circuit

The Sectionaliser (LBS) has a Supply

Interruption Counter that counts upstream
Recloser (ACR) operation when:
A fault is detected AND
Current drops to zero AND
Source side voltage is lost

The LBS detects downstream Phase,

Earth and SEF faults
When a preset number of Supply
interruptions is reached the switch (SEC)
opens during the recloser dead time
Fault conditions are isolated
Power is restored to fault-free sections

ACR = 3 trips to lockout / LBS = 2 interruptions + faults to trip

Current Transformers (CTs)

Current measurement is achieved by the purpose-built
CTs (1 per phase) installed in the recloser & sectionaliser
range which are designed to perform protection / detection
and metering functions when used with the ADVC
controller.
The CTs are not accessible as they are mounted around
the base of the bushings inside the tank.
The 3 CTs (1 for W-Series) are mounted around the base
of the 3 (typically, but configurable) source-side bushings on the:
I-side (horizontal) of the U & W-Series (I/II/III) (W 1 only)
I-side (same side as Manual Lockout Lever) of the RL-Series (I/II/III)
1-side (not horizontal) of the N-Series (U1/V1/W1)

Voltage measurement is achieved by Capacitive

Voltage Transformers (CVTs) embedded in the
moulded bushings.
Phase to Phase or Phase to Earth voltages are
measured and displayed both in WSOS5
(Measurement screen) and on the user interface
Each CVT is individually calibrated before the
product leaves the factory and the data stored in
the switchgear memory.
N & RL series have CVTs embedded in all 6
bushings. U and W series have CVTs embedded in
the 3 I side (horizontal) bushings but can be fitted
with additional external CVTs if required.

Trips straight to lockout and operator close (local or remote) is blocked can be applied as long as tripping is not inhibited

Sequence Control (Auto-Reclose = ON / Single Shot Timer = NOT ACTIVE)

Set in the element nearest the substation forces Trip Count to increment even when detected fault clears without tripping. Cleared by Sequence Reset

51

Curves & Discrimination

Deciding when to act, based on information collected from the Switchgear,
can be done in a number of ways:

Time-based discrimination
Definite Time Curve: trip or reset based on elapsed time from pickup

Current/voltage-based discrimination
Instantaneous Curve: instant trip or reset based on current/voltage level

Discrimination based on time and current/voltage

Inverse Curve: trip or reset based on a function of both time &
current/voltage
i.e. higher fault level = faster trip

The supplied WSOS5 software includes 8 standard IDMT (Inverse

Definite Minimum Time) curves, 42 non-standard curves, and the
ability to create User Defined Curves for both Overcurrent Trip &
Reset (6 curves for each of up to 10 protection groups), as well as
Under/Over Voltage and Sag/Swell curve pairs.
ACR: TRIP1 / TRIP2 / TRIP3 / TRIP4 / SINGLE SHOT / WORK TAG
6 curves: Protection & reset (2) x Phase, Earth & NPS (3) = 6

52

Detection

53

Detection Elements Current-based

Phase Overcurrent
Detect Phase to Phase short circuits
Earth Fault
Detect Phase to Earth / Phase to Phase to Earth
Sensitive Earth Fault
Detect low level but persistent Earth Faults
Negative Phase Sequence
Detect or alarm due to specific fault types NPS is present in Phase & Earth faults
Automatic Detection Group Selection ADGS Direction-based
Automatically switches between 2 detection groups based on the detected direction of power flow
Inrush Restraint (Transient current increase caused by motors starting / incandescent & arc lights / *magnetising transformers)
Raises Phase and Earth threshold currents for a short time to allow inrush currents to subside (Zero detect or SOHIR (Second Order Harmonic))
Cold Load Pickup (Increased time without supply = increased loss of diversity = increased load current when supply is restored)
Raises Phase and Earth threshold currents for a longer time to cater for loss of diversity

DETECTION: fault condition + trip after X supply interrupts

54

Detection Elements Voltage-based

Live Load Blocking

Blocks all close requests if any load-side bushing is live i.e. load side is energised with an incompatible supply

Alternate Detection Modes

Work Tag
Operator close (local or remote) is blocked

Software

61

WSOS5
The Windows Switchgear
Operating System 5 (WSOS5)
software package has been
developed to allow PC-based control
and configuration of the Schneider
Electric range of intelligent
switchgear.
WSOS5 can be used to directly
control switchgear over a
communication link or it can be used
to set up switchgear configurations
off-line for downloading to a
switchgear controller at a later date.
WSOS5 switchgear files can be
stored as part of a database of inservice configurations for installed
equipment.

62

WSOS5
The Windows Switchgear Operating System 5 (WSOS5)
is provided to all customers free of charge.
WSOS5 is instantly useable offline once installed, and
available for online use via a Program Serial Number
WSOS5 has 3 easy-to-remember default passwords:
Remote Access: 000000 (6 zeros)
Operation / Telecontrol / Protection-Detection: CAPM
System (Password Control): WSOS
In addition to the WSOS5 passwords, the setVUE and flexVUE
panels also request a password when changing data:
AAAA (the first A is provided use the Right Arrow to paint the remaining As, and
Select to accept)

WSOS5 provides quick display of all switchgear files in the

Switchgear Explorer pane files can be created while
connected to switchgear, or offline for later update.
WSOS5 is under constant development, and free upgrades
automatically protect existing settings & files.
