to do this in such a way as to help him gain
independence as rapidly as possible.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

Goal and objectives state actions for achieving
the purpose and philosophy. Goals are central
to the whole management process planning,
organizing, staffing, directing and controlling.
Planning defines the goals. The institution is
organized and staffed to accomplish the goals.

Cont

Goals and objectives may address services rendered,

economics, use of resources, people, Funds, and
facilities innovation, and social responsibilities.
Objectives are selective rather than global, are
multiple, and cover a wide range of activities.
1.Long Term goals
2.Short Term goals

PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy articulates a vision and provides a
statement of beliefs and values that direct ones
practice.

It

should

be

written,

include

in

appropriate documents, and reviewed periodically.

If the philosophy is stated in vague, abstract
term that and are not easily understood, it is
useless.

Cont
When
philosophy,

should

practice,

consider

research

and

nursing roles in the total organization. Poteet

(1988) identified three approaches that can be
used to incorporate nursing theory into the
philosophy.
11

Cont
An eclectic approach would select ideas from
various nursing and corporate them into the
philosophy statements: a theory might be
adopted and integrated into the philosophy, or
another

might

be

referred

to

throughout.

Attaching an explanation of the theory to the

philosophy would also be useful.
