Introduction

The bicycles are popular sports equipments .

A Bi-cycle frame should have low weight, high lateral

stiffness and moderate vertical stiffness.

The frame of the bicycle is the main structure to support

the external loads.

In the design process of the bicycle, the structural analysis

of frame or other parts are very important stage .

Traditional materials of the bicycle frame are the composite

materials are now widely used to make the bicycle frames and
we use carbon fiber, aluminum .

Concept:
This paper deals with the stress analysis of bicycle frame (mild
steel). The analysis is carried out in ANSYS and compared with
theoretical results. In theoretical analysis the frame is treated as
truss like structure and the stresses in various members of frame
like top tube, down tube are determined, considering various
condition like vertical impact, horizontal impact. Also Analysis is
done considering the above conditions.

Stress Comparison for Various Material

In the present investigation the structural analysis

result was combined with different materials for bicycle
frame.

In the above contour plot results, alloy steel having a

stress value of 29.769 and having the displacement value
of 78865, aluminum alloy having a stress value of 20.934
and having displacement value of 11330, mild steel having
a maximum stress value of 76.714 and displacement value
of 247116.

Fabrication Specification

As previously discussed the part of the project

includes the construction of bicycle frame.

The manufacturing method consists of the following

that are cutting, bending, shaping, and sizing, welding, and
finally fitting the engine and other accessories of bicycle
frame.

So that the above results the maximum value of stress

and displacement value is low at the aluminum alloy, so
that the aluminum alloy is concluded for the frame
fabrication.

Solution procedure

As per the material survey the best suited material is

the aluminum alloy. The mentioned material was chosen as
the material for bicycle frame fabrication due to its low
density and compatible yield strength.

This material was chosen for designing frame and

comparing its results with different materials as mild steel,
alloy steel.etc.

Fabrication Model

Conclusion
In this project we concluded that alloy steel is most suitable
for the frame fabrication depends on the following conditions
that are given,
As previously specified this prototype was constructed in an
attempt become familiar with the fabrication method and to
validate the finite element analysis.
The first and most substantial improvement which
reevaluated from the fabrication of this prototype is the
realization that the weights of alloy steel. This frame seems
generally too sulky have reduction of the frame thickness
was in order.

The project focus on structural analysis on frame using

four materials, Aluminum Alloy, Magnesium, Mild steel
and Alloy steel to validate our design.
By observing the results, for all the materials the stress
values are less than their respective permissible yield
stress values. So our design is safe.
By comparing the result for four materials, stress obtained
is same and displacement is less for aluminum alloy than
other four materials. It concludes that for our design,
aluminum alloy is better material for frame.

Suggestions for future work

By using the aluminum alloy we can suitably prepare

the model. As the material has less density compared to
another materials used for manufacturing of frame.

Alloy steel has an almost infinite service lifetime when

protected from the sun and unlike steel alloys have no
endurance limit when exposed to cyclic loading.
