RECOMMENDATION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The occurrence of corrosion is cause by the reaction of a
metal with the surrounding.
Corrosion rate can be measured by using electrochemical
noise method. This is one of the preferred method used.
Other device that available nowadays for corrosion
measuring are linear polarization probes. hydrogen
probes, and probes for impedance spectroscopy.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
The reasons that this project conducted is to
study all the element that involves in data
acquisition system for electrochemical noise.
The first element is the computer
The second is the signal conditioning circuit
The third is the dummy cell which represent
the noise resistance of the measurement.

OBJECTIVES
To study the electrochemical noise method in
measuring the corrosion rate.
To study the signal conditioning circuit in the
electrochemical noise
To study the noise resistance in the
electrochemical noise measurent.

SCOPE OF STUDY
Understanding the electrochemical noise method in
measuring corrosion rate.
Understanding the function of each element that
involved in data acquisition system for electrochemical
noise.
Using two set of dummy cell to represent two corrosion
system in illustrating the instrument noise.

THEORY
The fluctuation in current and potential either increasing or
decreasing when a material corrodes
Electrochemical current noise can be measured using two identical
working electrode that connected via ZRA
Electrochemical potential noise is measured as a potential
difference between a working electrode and a reference electrode.
There are many sources of electrochemical noise such as passive
film breakdown, crevice corrosion, pitting corrosion and uniform
corrosion.

METHODOLOGY
Instrument noise can be measured using a dummy cell consisting of
three resistors. Those resistors replacing the working and
reference elctrodes.
The resistor values were chosen by calculating the noise resistance
for a typical systems.
Rn = En / In
Used two set of dummy cell with difference resistance.
First, two 47k resistors as working electrodes and a 10k resistor as
a reference electrode
Secong, two 100 resistors as the working electrodes and a 10k
resistor as a reference electrodes.

GRAPH OF MEAN CURRENT AND POTENTIAL

FOR SECOND DUMMY CELL

DISCUSSION
From the first graph, we can see that the mean potential are
between 0.0166V till 0.0169V while for the current mean are from
0.05mA till 0.5mA.
While the second graph shows that the mean potential are from
0.0166V till 0.0174V and for mean current are 0.05mA till 0.4mA.
From a reference thesis that I refer shows the reading of a sample
that corroding in calcium hydroxide system, sodium nitrite system
and hydrochloric system.

14

Calcium hydroxide system

- the mean potential are between 0.363V till 0.3642V.
Sodium nitrite system
- the mean potential are between 0.25V till 0.2582V.
Hydrochloric acid system
- the mean potential are between 0.52316V till 0.52322V.

15

CONCLUSION
From comparing my result and the result
from the reference, the potential noise is
small enough to be neglected in the
measurement.
