WIND TURBINE

ANTWI, IDALECIO AND MOHAMMED

INTRODUCTION
In this assignment we have been asked to work in a team to design a
product or system within a set specification, and also to manufacture, test
and evaluate the results of the process.
There are three basic tasks to perform:
Form a project team with 3 or 4 members
Formulate a (simple) Product Design Specification that works within
given constraints.
Design a product or simple system that meets this specification
Manufacture the product or system and test it against the specification

EFFECTS OF INCREASING NUMBER OF

BLADES

Cost
Maintenance difficulty
Root of blades must be thinner to become
aerodynamically efficient
However, it may not withstand bending stresses.

CALCULATING MAXIMUM POWER FROM WIND

Density

of air () = 1.23 kg/

Diameter of turbine (D) = 400mm
Velocity of air (V) = 12m/s
Power coefficient()= 0.4
Power generated from wind (Pw) = x A x
where A = = A= 0.125
Pw = x 1.23 x 0.125 x x 0.4 = 53W power available
However, according to Bettz law, the maximum efficiency
That can be obtained is 59%.
Therefore the maximum mechanical power generated from wind energy is:
Pw = 53 x 0.59 = 31W

CALCULATING REYNOLDS NUMBER

Reynolds
number is the dimensionless number in
fluid mechanics to indicate whether fluid flow, a
body or a duct is steady or turbulent.
Based on our research, for a flow to be laminar,
the Reynolds number must not be more than 5 x
or

Where, = Reynold number

V = velocity of wind
= cord length
= kinematic viscosity of air

= 52500
which is laminar.

IMPROVEMENTS

Aerodynamic blade

Generator (5000 rpm)

Material used for blade (abs)

Generally lift force increases

With angle of attack and drag forces also increases.
However, at optimum angle of attack
Lift to drag ratio is maximum.

the twist along the blade made

Every airfoil cross section angle

of attack is optimum

RESULTS AFTER IMPROVEMENTS

Volts = 10.3v

RPM recorded by tacho meter = 1700rev/min

Wind speed = 30m/s

Current measured from bulb = 0.36 amps

Power generated calculation

P = IV
Where,
I is current
V is volts
Power = 0.36 x 10.3
= 3.6W
Our power obtained was enough to light a 5W bulb of 12V capacity
