Introduction
It

is a tool used in
separation processes,
specifically in solid/liquid
separation using the
principle of pressure drive,
provided by a slurry pump.

Objectives
This

project aims to create a 3D

object which is related to
Chemical Engineering with the
use of AUTOCAD and the
knowledge acquired in this
semester about this course.

To

make a 3D model of Filter press

Scope and Limitation

This project is limited to the old style filter

press. The stand of the Filter press was not
included to emphasize the filtering plates
and the wheels. Some details such as the
angle of inclination in the compressing
plates surface were excluded. The model
was assembled to create a whole filter
press. The frame was left out too.

Assumptions

The compressing plate surface was

assumed to be flat. The angle between the
handle of the wheel was assumed to be 90.

Methodology
Handle:
wheel : circles were drawn in 2D then
extruded.
UCS were changed per circles
In creating the wheels, in the drafting and
annotation, a circle was made with the
circumference of 6.1 and was extruded to
have a thickness of 2.1.

The handle which was assumed that 90

apart from each other was created by
making a circle in the sides of the bigger
circle.
The UCS by this time is already changed in
accordance to the axis of the first handle.
The second, third and fourth handle was
created in the same way. The four small
circles were extruded to have the thickness
of 6.5. At the center of the big circle, a small
circle with a circumference of 5.1 was drawn
and extruded to have a thickness of 14.7.

At the end of this circle, another circle with

the circumference of10.7 was drawn and
extruded to have a thickness of 1.2. This
circle would be adhered to the compressing
plate. All objects were selected and the
command union was used. In the
compressing plate, a rectangular object
were drawn with the dimensions of 4.5 x 4 x
4.5 .Another way of making this rectangular
object is by making a 2D rectangle and
extruding it to have the thickness of 4.5.

The filtering plate was made by making a

2D rectangle and extruding. The small
circles that are visible in the surface of the
plate were created by using the command
arc then array. Two plates are one-sided
plate (plates that dont have small circles in
the surface for both sides) while the rest is
double-sided plate.

The plate was then copied using the

command copy to have 5 filtering plates.
The stopping plate was made the same way
the compressing plate does. To create a
whole filter press object, all parts were
joined by using the command join.

Results

Small circle in the handle:

C = 2r
5.1 = 2r
r = 0.8116

Small circle attached to the compressing

plate:
C = 2r
10.7 = 2r
r = 1.70296

Conclusion

This project aims to make a 3D model of the Filter

Press. Filter press is a tool used in separation
processes, specifically in solid/liquid separation
using the principle of pressure drive, provided by
a slurry pump. The filter press is composed of
four main parts; wheel, compressing plate,
filtering plate and stopping plate. The only
problem encountered is the joining of the parts.
Some parts cant be joined directly because of
different UCS used, especially in making the
wheel.

The circles and the rectangle that

composes the filtering plates cant be joined
too. The students used the command union
but it is not applicable if all circles will be
selected at once, so they reside in selecting
the circles one by one, and the total numbers
of circles were 461. Some details were left out
too. So the researchers recommend the next
researchers to give a very detailed model of
filter press.
