depending upon the country of
operation.
Airtel had over 351 million customers
across its operations at the end of
December 2015.

2007: Vodafone acquires a 67% stake in Hutchison Essar
for $10.7 billion. The company is renamed Vodafone
Essar. 'Hutch' is rebranded to 'Vodafone'.
2011: Vodafone Group buys out its partner Essar from its
Indian mobile phone business. It paid $5.46 billion to
take Essar out of its 33% stake in the Indian subsidiary.
It left Vodafone owning 74% of the Indian business.

2013: Vodafone files FIPB application to increase stake to
100% in Vodafone India (following 100% FDI in Telecom
sector)
Vodafone receives FIPB clearance to increase stake to
100% in India unit.

invested over Rs 10,000 crore during this year's
auction to acquire 800 MHz spectrum in 10
circles and 1800 MHz spectrum in 6 circles.

Reliance Jio has laid more than 2.5 lakh
kilometres of fibre-optic cables, covering 18,000

square feet of cloud data centres and a multiTerabit capacity international network.
Financial year 2016-17 will be the first full year
of commercial operations.

In 2002 Changed name to Idea Cellular Limited and
launched "Idea" brand name.
IDEA Cellular is a publicly listed company, having
listed on BSE & NSE in March 2007.
It is the 3rd largest mobile services operator in India
with wireless revenue market share at 18.2 % in
2015.
Idea Cellular is part of the Aditya Birla Group.
Idea was the first cellular service provider to launch
General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Enhanced
Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) in the country.

MTNL was set up on 1 April 1986 by theGovernment of
Indiawith the aim of upgrading the quality of telecom
services, expanding the telecom network, introducing new
services and raising revenue for the telecom development
needs of India's key metros -Delhiand Mumbai.
MTNL's history in Mumbai dates back to 1882 when a
company called Bombay Telephone was founded. Bombay
Telephone set up the first Telephone exchange in Mumbai
on 28 January 1882.
Delhi's first telephone system with manual exchange was
established in 1911.
MTNL has set up a wholly owned subsidiary
calledMahanagar Telephone Mauritius Limited
(MTML)inMauritius, providingmobileand international
long distance services.
MTNL is present inNepalthrough its Joint Venture United
Telecom Limited (UTL).
