Automatic Performance Reserve

(APR)

PanAm International Flight Academy, Inc. 2001

APR is a third-generation power augmentation system

Water Meth was an active system
Water Meth with Power Aug was an active system backed up by
a passive system
APR is a passive system
that means it doesnt work unless there is an engine failure
used strictly for take off to meet second segment climb
performance with an failed engine

APR uses on-board systems to function

SRL
Fuel Enrichment

Power
Essential DC
switch on center console

APR Switch
OFF
ARM
Activates APR relays
looks for failed engine
ARM light on engine
instrument panel

ARM annunciator
indicates APR switch
has been placed in
ARM position.
System armed.
Engine Torque must
be above 60% for
system to be
activated

L R

How to identify failed engine ?

Once system activated
loss of Torque to below 50%
relays send signal to APR
compensator
illuminates annunciator for
engine it is adding power
compensator has SRL decrease
EGT indication by 20
Meanwhile, signal to the Fuel
Enrichment Valve adds fuel to
engine to regain the 20 EGT
reduction

increase of EGT will increase

Torque by up to 4%
key word is up to 4%
Note TTL - Torque over
100%, fuel will be bypassed
obviously, then, APR is used
only when Temp Limited Take
Off
Effectively, overtemping good
engine, so 5 minute limit AND
must be written up in log book

Emergency
Push Light Cluster
additional power to
all operating engines

COMPEN TEST
tests compensator

L R

Compensator Test
testing to insure SRL will be able
to decrease EGT by 20

APR Test
Prior to first use of APR that day
TTL test must be done first
Procedure
after TTL test, power slightly above flight idle
select ARM, observe ARM annunciator
comp test to left engine-note EGT drop. Repeat for
right engine
push light cluster. Note L and R illuminate and
torque increase on both engines
switch to OFF. Note lights go out and torque returns
to normal

power to about 60-65% torque

rearm APR - note ARM light
simulate failed engine by pulling PL < 50% torque
note light for other engine and torque rise
return PL to original torque, note light goes out
repeat for other engine

Summary
APR used on Temperature Limited days
APR used to increase take off weight and meet second segment
climb in case of engine failure on take off
provides up to an additional 4% torque on the good engine
effectively over temps the good engine to achieve this additional
power
limited to 5 minutes because of the over temp
strictly passive system. Will not operate unless an engine fails
