An information system (IS) consists of all the components that work
together to process data and produce information. Almost all business
information systems consist of many subsystems with subgoals, all
contributing to the organizations main goal.
One of an information systems most important contributions to the
organization is the automation of information exchange among
subsystems (such as departments and divisions)
FUNCTIONAL SILOS
Information systems and organizations evolved into functional silos.
Silos are basically compartmentalized operating units isolated from
their environment.
In business, a unit or department within which communication and
collaboration occurs vertically, with limited cooperation outside the
unit.
Horizontal Silos

FUNCTIONAL SILOS
Vertical Silos
Hierarchical Model of Organization
The role of information systems has been and always will be one of
supporting business activities and enhancing the workers efficiency.
Over time, as business changes and expands, systems need to change
to keep pace.
The result is a wide variety of information systems and computer
architecture configurations creating heterogeneous or independent
nonintegrated systems which ultimately create bottlenecks and
interfere with productivity.
The information systems that work independently and are grouped by
the various functions and departments, or both, are known as silos.
These systems cannot share data and therefore require users to
access multiple systems to integrate the data manually.
The essential problem with functional silos is that organizations
design, manage, and reward their employees and managers by
functional performance, yet they deliver value to customers via crossKOM UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL AND SYSTEM ENGINEERING INFORMATION SY
