Atigas project

Good-Positive effects of
projects

Provide job opportunities

Raise living standards
Attract foreign investments
Economic transformation for Perak state
Reduce Malaysians reliance on imported steel
Growth and development
Enhance infrastructure

Atigas
3,000 jobs
attract more industries to move to Perak, especially near
Manjung
government was expected to save RM2 billion in subsidy a
year because Atigas would sell the gas at the same
subsidised price.
use of LNG is in line with the state's policy of moving towards
green technology.
LNG is cleaner. It is also cost-efficient,
motorists save up to 70% on gas consumption.
Maegma
aims to cater to the growing domestic demand and to help
reduce Malaysias dependence on steel imports
boosting the economic growth in Perak by 16.5% and the
country's annual gross domestic product by 0.7%,
6,000 jobs

Bad-Negative impact of
projects
Potential adverse effects and would directly
impact the natural environment and coastal area
here
Proposed location of the two projects clearly
contradicts the National Physical Plan (NPP).
Potential impacts to the fisheries sector,
especially coastal fisheries.
May introduce more foreign workers into country

Ugly- Worst possible impact of

the projects
1. Pollution (air, water, land)
-dangerous levels of carbon monoxide emissions cause air
quality to worsen
- Air pollution also causes deterioration of buildings and
private property
- toxic waste disposal into waterways
- dumping site for solid waste
2. Population health and well being
- Studies show rise in respiratory diseases among
populations near to existing steel plants
- Bad air quality can also affect eyesight

Cont.
3. Loss of natural habitat and biodiversity
- Kerangas forest exist in few areas
- Endemic plants Shorea lumutensis (rare
dipterocarp tree)
- Turtle breeding grounds will be affected
- Marine biodiversity will be affected
4. Climate change affecting mainly micro climate of
Tanjung Hantu Forest reserve

Discussion
What is our role? What can we do?
Protest, increase awareness, try to conserve biodiversity,
establish a record for all species present in the area
SAM- Sahabat Alam Malaysia
- project sites have more potential to be conserved for
research and education on biological diversity, as well as
nature tourism in line with the Vision, Objectives and
Strategy of District Development, Manjung Local Plan 2002
- 2015.
