Managing Kuwait Oil Fields

Reconstruction Project
Group- 02

This case describes an enormous undertaking made up of many different

project. Which of these project can be considered the most
important ? Why?
The Kuwait Oil Field Reconstruction Projects was divided into two parts:Al-Awda
Al-Tameer

Al Awda (The Return) Project.

An estimated 80% of oil wells had been ignited by the retreating Iraqi army
KOC teams in the United States of America, Europe and the Gulf Cooperation
Council countries worked on the Al Awda project.

Al Tameer (The Reconstruction) Project.

Kuwait Oil Companys moved towards the rehabilitation of 18 damaged
Gathering Centers and the restoration of oil production.
Recovery and treatment of an estimated 20 million barrels of weathered
crude oil from approximately 240 surface oil lakes, the rebuilding of over
40 storage and process tanks, and the refurbishment of the oil export
facilities

Most Important the projects can be classified into two parts:1. Direct Action
2. Indirect Action
DIRECT ACTION:
This is the action on which other activities are dependent on it.
In this project it was named Al Awada.
o. Mere nine months to cap 650 damaged or burning oil wells.
o. To fully extinguish a single oil well required a process that involved many
phases. First, the site was prepared and combed, mines and barb wires were
removed from the areas surrounding the well, and its nearby oil lakes were
emptied. This first process was conducted in order to allow the land to more
quickly recover to its natural state
o. The second phase consisted of extinguishing the well, cleaning its head after a
very close and thorough inspection, and an examination and preparation of all
necessary equipment and measurements.
o. The extinguishing process was carried out either through oil pumping or by
installing a piece inside the wellhead that already existed during the oil flow.

o After the second phase, the well was sprayed with cool water.
o The third phase dealt mainly with repairing the wellhead and preparing it for
operations.
o Three wells on average were extinguished daily, and the maximum number of
wells controlled in one day was thirteen.
o Recovering of oil.
After Iraq escalated its war on the environment by releasing more than 11
million barrels of oil into the Gulf, Bechtel swiftly coordinated the effort to
clean up the water and shoreline.
It did most successful oil recovery, out of 11 million barrels spilled,13%
were recovered compared to average recovery of 8 to 9 %.
o For extinguishing fire 150 Km of pipeline capable of delivering 20,000,0000
gallons of water per day was installed .
Therefore until extinguishing the well fire and eliminating the risk of
unexploded shell and mines was carried no further work was possible.

Support activities.
o After the success completion of the project Al Awda,
necessary infrastructure had to be provided.
o 16,000 workers we employed to get back the oil fieds to there
pre war condition.
o Creation and distribution of food and housing was also and
big challenge to come over in a county where the war just
ended.
