ENERGY FUTURE OF INDIA

Presented By
Govind Singh Kushwaha

ENERGY POTENTIAL OF INDIA

Possess Huge Potential to be Energy

Independent State.
Huge Reserves of Conventional Sources like
Coal, Lignite, Gas, Hydrates etc.
Huge Reserves of Renewable Sources like
Water, Wind etc.
Presently the most reserves are beyond the
reach of mining techniques.

A Snapshot Of Indias Oil

Economy(2004-2005)

In million tones
*In billion cubic meters

Import Bill is Rs 117032 crore

Consumption Graph Of Coal And

Lignite

COAL AND LIGNITE

NEGATIVES:
Relatively Low Heat Value.
Inefficiency in Conversion.
High Ash Content.
Difficulty in Transportation.
Residual Disposal.
POSITIVES:
Massive Reserve.
Coal Gasification Technology.
Mid to Long Term Solution.

Consumption Graph Of Petroleum

Products And Natural Gas

OIL AND GAS

NEGATIVES:
Only 0.5% of the World Total Reserve.
India will remain a net Importer of Oil and Gas.
Two-Third of the Oil is used by Transportation Sector.
Policy of Cross Subsidization in Power tariffs and
Inevitable Power Cuts has resulted in all industrial
units running their own Captive Power Plants.
POSITIVES:
A Short to Mid Term Solution.

NUCLEAR FUEL
Electricity production is largely Dependent on Coal
and Gas.
Better to switch over to Nuclear and Hydro power.
POSITIVES:
1.Vast Reserve of Thorium.
2.India is reaching an understandability with Nuclear
Club.
3.Long Term Solution to Energy Needs.
NEGATIVES:
1.Safety issue relating both to the reactors as well as
the residue.

RENEWABLE SOURCES

Solar Energy.
Hydro-Power Energy
Wind Energy.
Geo-Thermal Energy.
These are only supplementary resources until
we develop a massive, cost-efficient power
storage method.

OTHER EMERGING SOURCES

Gas Hydrates Crystalline Methane.

Hydrogen and Fuel Cells.
Bio-diesel.
CBM (Coal Based Methane).

FUTURE NEED BY 2011-2012

Coal Energy: 254.93 MTOE

Lignite : 22.05 MTOE
Crude Oil :185.40 MT
Gas : 57.60 billion cubic metre
Nuclear Power :14.16 billion KW
Hydro Power : 18.54 billion KW
Wind Power : 45,000 MW
Others :35,000 MW
Total Requirements : 723.93 MTOE

EFFECTIVE ENERGY
UTILIZATION

Mass Transportation System.

Expansion of Railways.
Discouraging use of Captive Generators.
Clean, Safe and Reliable Transmission and
Distribution.
Development of Alternate Fuel like Gas
Hydrates, using Better Conversion and
Conservation Technologies

SOLUTION TO ENERGY
INDEPENDENCE.

There is NO Ultimate Solution.

Combination of Coal, Lignite, Hydro Power,
Thorium, Renewable and Indigenous as well
as Imported Oil and Gas should be used in an
Efficient Manner.
We can Turn From Energy Importer to a
Energy Exporter.
Need to Revamp our Pricing Policies.
