Increase in Bird Strikes

Causes

Why Bird Strikes are increasing?

The trend of bird strikes is on the increase
all over the world due to:

12/3/16

Increase in Air Traffic.

More sophisticated and quieter aircraft.
Birds adopt habits and become use to the danger
posed by aircraft to them.
Mushroom growth of unplanned localities around
airport.
Incompatible land use around airport.
Increase in birds / wildlife due to successful wildlife
conservation by WWF.

RECOMMENDATION
S

Recommendations for:
Local Municipal Authorities / Cantonment
Boards

Long Term Plans

Ensure implementation of The Aircraft (Removal of

Danger to Safety) Ordinance No. XII of 1965 and
amendment thereto vide ordinance X of 2001, in their
area of jurisdiction.
Earmark the sites and sources that cause presence of
birds in the vicinity of airport.
Devise a collective program for reduction and
subsequently removal of those sources which are uncompatible with safe flight operations.
Setting time frame for the execution of the program.

Recommendations for:
Local Municipal Authorities / Cantt
Boards
Immediate Measures by General Public /
Local Bodies and Cantt. Boards
Ensure
the transportation of garbage in
controlled manners.
Do not throw edibles openly
House trash to be disposed-off properly in the
specified places
All
bird attractants to be disposed off
appropriately

Public /
Local
Municipal
Authorities
/ Cantt
Local Bodies and Cantt Boards
Boards

Do not throw dead animals openly rather bury

them or inform airport or municipal authorities
for their removal.
At wedding ceremonies, the people should not
throw bones, meat and other eatables in the
open areas. The same is to be practiced by the
owners of the marriage halls.
Hunting around airport should be avoided as it
invites protesting birds
Prevent pet birds, specially pigeon around
airport.
Avoid kite flying (as kite is equally dangerous if

close to the airport.

Recommendations :
Manager Airside

Ensure regular trimming of bushes and grass

generally on the airside and particularly around
runway.
Frequency of patrolling the runway by bird
shooters must be increased commensurate
with level of bird activity. If necessary deploy
additional manpower and vehicle(s).
Notamize the bird hazard, if the activity
prevails for longer periods.

16 August 2016
Birds Aircraft Strike Hazard Session

54

Recommendations :
Staf
deployed
on
the
Airside
Preventive measures to be adopted by staf
of various airport agencies deployed on the
airside:

Do not throw garbage/eatable, disposable,

bones etc., openly on the airside or near the
fence.
Keep the area around work place free of any
activities that lure birds or strayed animals.
Do not feed birds, strayed dogs/cats etc.
and/or patronize them.

Birds Aircraft Strike Hazard Session

Continued on next
55 slide

Recommendations :
Staf deployed on the Airside

Continued from
previous slide
Manage entry gates to airside in such a manner
which prevents entry of strayed animals through
these gates.
Close any holes and/or demolish hideouts (as
applicable) which facilitates, such animal to enter
and roam around on the airside.
If any strayed animal or bird activity observed on
the airside, immediately inform ATC.

Recommendations for HQCAA

1. Training to the concerned officials
2. Provision of appropriate and adequate
resources
3. Hiring
the
services
of
Biologist/Ornithologist for study of bird
species, behaviors and their life cycles,
and to work out Bird Strike Risk
Management Plan (BRMP)

4. Research & Development:
To establish a Research & Development cell
with the following objectives:
.

To exchange information on the subject with the

relevant international and regional forums for
enhancing collective experience.
To coordinate all relevant activities and keep
abreast the locations regarding new techniques and
ideas in the field.
To design and implement at all airports a thorough
program on the lines of Birds and Animal Strike
Hazard (BASH).

Recommendations for HQCAA

Continued from

To maintain an effective previous
and interactive
computerized database of bird/wildlife strikes.
The airport wise periodic analysis of which may
be promulgated to all the airports with
recommendations.
To encourage universities to assign tasks to
their related departments to carry out research
on
ornithological
and
environmental
engineering.
To run campaign at frequent intervals for the
