6. Ribosomes

CYTOSKELETON

Maintains cell shape

Often protects the cell
Enables cellular motion
Plays an important role in
intracellular transport
Is very important in cell division

MICROVILLI

Absorption
Secretion
Cellular adhesion

CENTRIOLES

Help in division of chromosomes

organizing microtubules.

CILIA

For single cells, such as sperm, this

enables them toswim.
For cells anchored in a tissue, like
theepithelial cells lining our air
passages, this moves liquid over the
surface of the cell

FLAGELLA

Used to propel the organism

forward.

RIBOSOMES

Protein synthesis

Endoplasmic Reticulum

Lysosomes
Peroxisomes

MITOCHONDRIA

Provides energy for the cell

NUCLEUS

Regulates all cell

activity

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM
Rough endoplasmic - Synthesis of
proteins and is also a membrane factory
for the cell
Smooth Endoplasmic - involved in the
synthesis of lipids, including oils,
phospholipids and steroids, metabolism
of carbohydrates, regulation of calcium
concentration and detoxification of
drugs and poisons.

Golgi Apparatus

Packages proteins inside the cell

before they are sent to their
destination
Important in the processing of
proteins forsecretion.

LYSOSOME

Break down waste materials and

cellular debris.
They can be described as the
stomach of the cell.

PEROXISOMES
(Microbodies)

breakdown of very long chainfatty

acidsthroughbeta-oxidation

Tissue

Tissue is a group of cells that have

similar structure and that function
together as a unit.

Types of Tissue
Epithelial -line thecavitiesand surfaces of
structures throughout the body, and also form
manyglands.
Connective - supports, connects, or
separates different types of tissues and organs
of the body
Muscle - composesmuscles in animal bodies,
and gives rise to muscles' ability to contract.
Nervous - the main component of the two
parts of thenervous system, which regulates
and controls body functions

ORGAN
Tissues are joined together to form organs
Organs

Structures that are composed of two or

more different types of tissues
Have specific functions and
recognizable shapes
Examples:
Heart, lungs, kidneys
Stomach is made of several tissues
Serous membrane, smooth muscle
and epithelial layers for digestion

System
A system consists of related organs with a
common function
Organ-system level
10 systems of the human body
