Introduction to CNC Milling Machine

CNC: stands for Computer Numerical Control
Milling: a process in which a rotating multi-tooth cutter
removes material while traveling along various axis with
respect to the work piece.

CNC MILLING MACHINE :

CNC milling is a specific form of
Computer Numerical Controlled
(CNC) machining.
In CNC Milling machining operation
is controlled by a computer rather
than manually controlled.

CNC milling machine can be used in

3 axis X, Y, Z .All the movement of axis
is controlled by CNC system.
Programming is same as CNC lathe
machine. Only Y-axis is added to the
program.

CNC Milling Machine is equipped
with servo motors.

CNC Milling machines are suitable for machining the plane and threedimensional components of complex-shapes, such as punch die,
pressing die, forging die and plastic die, cam, plane and internalcombustion engine etc.

It contains M.C.U i.e Machine Control Unit. It is Electronic and

computerized interface between operator and Machine

Most CNC milling machines also

integrate a device for pumping fluid to
the cutting tool during machining for
cooling purpose.

Working Principle
Movement of X, Y, Z axis are controlled by motor supplied either with AC or DC
Depending on the machine type there are commonly 2 to 5 axis.
Its controlled by codes e.g. G and M codes.

Each number or code is assigned to a particular operation e.g. speed,

feed, and depth of cut etc.
G and M codes are automatically generated by the Cad/Cam software.
Part program is entered in to the computer and stored in the memory.
Then it is used again and again.
It contains two distinct controls, one is CNC controller which doses the
function of program decoding interpolation, diagnostics machine
actuation etc. Another is programmable logic controller (PLC), which
dose spindle on off, coolant on off, turret operation etc.
Position and speed is monitored and checked through the feedback
transducers to ensure the accuracy of positioning

Advantages of CNC Milling Machine

Increased productivity speed.
Better dimensional accuracy which gives exact and correct
dimension.
Graphical display of the cutter path and shape of the finished job
before actually running the program is possible (simulation).
Part program can be used again and again.
Warning safety devices are available with CNC milling.
Accuracy and high finished surfaces are obtained.
Mass production with greater accuracy is the main advantage of
CNC machine.
The part program once entered can be edited for any errors or
design changes.

Disadvantages of CNC Milling Mahine

High initial cost.
Need high qualified operator.
It is expensive to repair.
