SCOPE OF THE STUDY
INTODUCTION:-

Due to its poor seismic performance, unreinforced masonry has been banned in
some countries .

So today reinforced masonry offers an efficient and cost effective construction

system .

It is required to have knowledge regarding the strength and behaviour of the

reinforced masonry wall.

First reinforced masonry was used in the 1950s in Hungary.

There are lot of arguments about the actuality of reinforced masonry. Although
brick belong to the conventional and traditional building material, reinforced
concrete frames favored in construction nowadays. In that case the masonry is
used purely as an infill wall.
.
INTRODUCTION CONTD :-

In hungry many tall buildings are built every year and countries like America
the unreinforced masonry wall construction has been banned.

Unfortunately the culture of masonry decayed in the last decade. A possible

reason of that is that smaller emphasis is laid on masonry than on reinforced
concrete or steel structures in university education. However, masonry is an
important part of the building industry because private houses of significant
number are built from brick today.
LITERATURE REVIEW :-

Also
the brick has been used since the earliest times, the knowledge about the behaviour of
masonry is almost the least complete today.

reinforced masonry

o Reinforced masonry offers an efficient and cost- effective construction system in North
America.

oThispaper presents a state-of-the-art report on advances of knowledge regarding behavior,

design and construction of contemporary reinforced masonry in North America in the past three
decades.

oEmphasis is given to the seismic response of reinforced masonry walls, substructures and
structures.
LITERATURE REVIEW CONTD :-

Anita Fodi and Istvan Bodi 2001 Basics of reinforced masonry

Behaviour of masonry is explained in detail for compressive, tensile and shear

forces, as well as for bending moments.

Different types of reinforced masonry are reviewed and characterized. The

practical applications of bed joint reinforced masonry and of the masonry
modeling are presented.

The main goal of the article was to give a general review on reinforced
masonry walls in order to highlight its advantages compared to
unreinforced masonry.

From the summarized behaviours a comparison with reinforced concrete walls

can be concluded.
LITERATURE REVIEW CONTD :-

In order to show that reinforced masonry can be a competitor of the cast in situ
reinforced concrete structures some important characteristics are compared.

the specific weight of reinforced masonry is smaller, the thermal and

conductivity of the masonry is worse and it also has better resistance
OBJECTIVES :-

The objective of this project is to summarize the basic knowledge about the
reinforced masonry in order to show its benefits and its diversity.

The main parameter which are studied here are:

behaviour and flexural strength of reinforced masonry walls under loading.

elastic and inelastic behaviour of reinforced masonry walls.

cracking patterns and cracking moments, load-dejection curves up to and

beyond the peak load, and displacement ductility.
PROCEDURE :-

This project presents the test results of an investigation carried out to study the
behaviour and flexural strength of reinforced masonry walls under loading.

The study addresses the elastic and inelastic behaviour of reinforced masonry
walls.

Six walls will be tested to determine the effects of reinforcement to the

masonry wall.

The behaviour included cracking patterns and cracking moments, load-

dejection curves up to and beyond the peak load, and displacement ductility.

Test results showed that the percentage and location of vertical steel had a
significant effect on wall load-deflection curves, strength, and ductility.
PROCEDURE CONTD :-

Flexural rigidity and deflection under service loads.

Comparison of specified value of the modulus of rupture in the Indian code to

the experimental values of maximum tensile stress at first crack obtained for
reinforced masonry walls.

And to determine the ultimate strength, Displacement ductility and comparing

it with experimental results.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY :-

Today, reinforcement masonry construction offers an attractive and cost efficient building
system for hotels, residential building, correction facilities, schools, commercial buildings
and ware houses in seismic and non seismic areas.

The main goal of the present article was to give a general review on reinforced masonry
walls in order to highlight its advantages compared to unreinforced masonry. From the
summarized behaviours an awakening comparison with reinforced concrete walls can be
concluded.

Inorder to show that reinforced masonry can be a competitor of the cast in situ reinforced
concrete structures some important characteristics are compared.

It does not required formwork, the implementation is simpler and cheaper.

the wall can be loaded right after finishing the construction.
