MINE WASTE UTILIZATION

ABSTRACT
In this case study we address and review the status of
phytoremediation as a technology to reduce and control
contaminated mine wastes. Several different approaches and
different plant species are used to remove environmentally
toxic metals from mine waste sites. Such approaches have the
objective of restoring mining waste sites to human and animal
use, or at least, to curtail or eliminate the off-site movement of
toxic entities that potentially could reach humans. We conclude
that Phytoremediation is a low cost and eco-friendly remedy
for the treatment of heavy metal wastes in the environment.
What is phytoremediation?

Phytoremediation is defined as the use of green metal accumulating

plants for removal of heavy metal from soil as well as water.
USES OF PHYTOREMEDIATION

Remediation of different media:

Air
Soil,sediments.
Ground water.
Wastewater streams
-industrial
-agricultural
-municipal,sewage.
CLASSIFICATION OF PHYTOREMEDIATION

Phytoextraction

Metal Phytodegradation

Rhizofiltration
Phytoextraction
Plant roots uptake metal
contaminants from the soil.

Once the plants have grown and

absorbed the metal pollutants they
are harvested and disposed off safely
Phytodegradation
Phytodegradation is also known as
phytotransformation.

It is the breakdown of contaminants

taken by the plants.
Rhizofiltration
It is concerned with the remediation of contaminated groundwater

The contaminants are either adsorbed onto the root surface or are
absorbed by the plant roots

Chernobyl - sunflowers
were grown in radioactively
contaminated pools
Advantages of Phytoremediation

Cost effective when compared to other more

conventional methods.
nature method, more aesthetically pleasing.
minimal land disturbance.
reduces potential for transport of
contaminants by wind, reduces soil erosion
hyperaccumulaters of contaminants mean a
much smaller volume of toxic waste.
multiple contaminants can be removed with the
same plant.

7 constructed wetland companies
>40 consulting/engg. Companies that also do
phytoremediation

-founded mostly by EPA,DOD,DOE
-some commercial/joint projects

CONCLUSION

Phytoremediation , which makes use of vegetation to remove,

detoxify, or stabilize persistent pollutants, is a green and
environmentally-friendly tool for cleaning polluted soil and
water. The advantage of high biomass productive and easy
disposal makes plants most useful to remediate heavy metals
on site. We conclude that Phytoremediation is a low cost and
eco-friendly remedy for the treatment of heavy metals in the
environment.
