WHAT IS MARRIAGE?
Marriage is the union between a man and a
woman such that the children born to the
woman are recognized as legitimate offspring
of both partners. (Royal Anthropological
Research 1951, p.111)
DOWRY
- a marital exchange in which the wifes
group provides substantial gifts to the
husbands family.
BRIDEWEALTH
- a costumary gift to compensate the brides
group for the loss of her companionship and
labor.
ENDOGAMY
- the practice of marrying within a specific ethnic
group, class or social group rejecting other on such a
basis of being unsuitable for marriage or for other close
personal relationships.
ROYAL ENDOGAMY
- royal brother-sister marriages.
EXOGAMY/ EXOGAMOUS
- the practice of seeking a husband or wife outside
ones own group, has adaptive value because it links
people into a wider social network that nurtures, helps
and protects them in times of need.
INCEST
- refers to the sexual relations with someone
considered to be a close relative.
POLYGAMY
- Is a marriage that includes two or more partners
SORORATE
- custom by which a widower marries the sister of his
deceased wife.
LEVIRATE
- custom by which a widower marries the brother of
her deceased husband.

- When a man is married to more than one wife at a

- When a woman is married to more than one
husband at a time
FRATERNAL POLYANDRY
- when a woman marries a group of brothers.
PATER
- socially recognized father of a child but not
necessarily the genitor.
