What is a 3D-Model ?

4/13/17 4
3 D P L A N T D E S I G N A N D E N G I N E E R I N G S O F T W A R E

Why to create a 3D-Model ?

Just create ONE 3D-model and use it in SEVERAL tasks
Drawings (Lay Out, Sections,)
Calculations (quantity, process calculations,)
Isometric-drawings (prefabrication, pipe racks, bending machines,..)
Visual reports (maintenance, project meetings,)
etc
Stretch your imagination !!!

+ It takes about same time to create a 3D-model than 2D-drawing

- Administrating 3D-Software is more difficult than in 2D-Designing

4/13/17 5
3 D P L A N T D E S I G N A N D E N G I N E E R I N G S O F T W A R E

Why 3D-Design ?
Improve the quality of engineering and cut down the error rate...
E.g. collision control, specifications
...with less time
E.g. Less documents are needed, Design Tools...
Distributed design (Several designers can build one 3D-model)
Etc

Efficient 3D-modeling organization

One person is responsible Administrator
Main task is focus to Administration
Good administration is most profitable work
Also a Deputy Administrator is needed
In big projects responsible designers for
Modeling buildings
Modeling equipment
Document production
Layout- and piping design
Project Manager divides project to area responsible designers
Main designer first routes main pipelines into model and is
responsible that model is congruent
Area responsible designers are responsible for modeling certain
area

VISUALIZER / OpenGL CONFIGURATION

File => Options => User Settings => Visualization => Configure OpenGL Visualizer
Create as on-demand basis creates a shaded object when the object is first
time used by views.
Check memory limit before creating. Limits usage of physical memory of
shaded views. Use limits if you have problems with shaded views or with
walkaround. Use smaller value than you have physical memory (CPU) installed
into computer
"Default Transparency" allows you to define the transparency value used with
objects marked as transparent but that are using opaque surface material. An
opaque surface material has the alpha component (fourth) set to 1.0 in its colors.
To make these objects transparent the visualizer temporarily replaces this alpha
value with value (1 - transparency/100).

Occlusion Test, Visibility of a Point

To determine if some point P is visible, we shoot a
ray from the cyclopean origin O (on and near the
fish's mouth) to P (see Fig. ). First, if and the angle
between the ray and the fish's x-axis is less than 150
degrees then P is within the view volume. Second, to
examine if P is occluded, we test if the ray intersects
other objects (fishes or static obstacles) in the fish's
view volume.

Define systems
Everything in model must have a System. For example pipes in "Fresh Water",
building in "Building", Steel constructions in "Platforms" or "Supports", Pumps in
"Equipment" etc
New system:

Give a name, which describes System best way, pick up color and Stipple for it.
More colors can be defined with Configure colors tool

4/13/17 98
3 D P L A N T D E S I G N A N D E N G I N E E R I N G S O F T W A R E

Define pipelines
Pipes are routed according Systems. First when routing a Pipe, you pick up the right
system then you choose the right pipeline from this system.

Give pipelines name and choose specification(s) for it. Add required attribute
information.

4/13/17 99
3 D P L A N T D E S I G N A N D E N G I N E E R I N G S O F T W A R E

Specifications
Piping Specification or Pipe Class is rule, which defines what type of pipes,
flanges, bends, branches, valves, etc. are allowed to use.
Meaning of this is, that when routing a pipe, after you picked right system
and pipeline, you automatically have right type of piping parts and standard
components in use.
Specifications are managed by Cadmatic administrators

Navigation
Hold down the left mouse button to move around in the model. You can walk forward or
backwards by moving the mouse cursor up or down, respectively. Turn by moving the
mouse cursor left or right. It is possible to move forward or backward and turn at the
same time. The cursor's distance from the center of the browser window controls the
speed of movement. There are two special modes: panning and turning.
Panning
Moving the mouse cursor has different effects when the Shift button is being hold down.
In this mode, the viewer moves in the direction of the mouse cursor. This means that
you can only move in the plane that is perpendicular to the view direction.
Turning
The modes described above do not allow you to look up or down. To do that, you must
hold down the Ctrl (Control) key. In this mode, the viewer turns in the direction of the
mouse cursor.

ADD VALVE TO PIPELINE

At this exercise, a valve is added to the existing pipe

PIPING Standard Component Insert Valve (Instrument)
Take cursor "inside" pipe, and when at the right place (c, w, q, d from
Navigate-commands can be used)
Press the right mouse button and choose " Insert into Line" = L chosen
pipe turns to white,
DONE = F12.

3 D P L A N T D E S I G N A N D E N G I N E E R I N G S O F T W A R E

Then Valve appears to model to the pipeline. Program asks if orientation is

OK. Orientation is direction in pipeline-axis. Important, for example, when
inserting non-return valves.

Next program asks, rotation around

connection line.
Rotation = "handlebar under or

There should be two different object category (because different object
types):
Duct part as master object ( Duct type )
Flanges or frames as dependent objects ( Beam type )

then dependent objects will be selected too.

If You select all of HVAC part (All of a Kind),

then only Duct parts will be selected only.

TIPS & TRICKS

Use associative annotations
Define 2D startup files so, that there is no need to change defaults. If need
to use e.g. several text sizes then fix text size in the symbol definition.
Object data and coordinates are easily available, never write this kind of
information manually
Automatic annotations sometimes handy e.g. equipment and valve
positions, pipe end fills and insulation symbols
Do not draw frame lines or module lines manually

4/13/17 229
3 D P L A N T D E S I G N A N D E N G I N E E R I N G S O F T W A R E

ASSOCIATIVE ANNOTATIONS
Changing settings can be done from drawings menu:

- If annotations are placed as associate, they remain

so, even if you disable associatively. Change setting
will affect only in new annotations.
- Be careful with imported items (e.g. from AutoCAD) if
associative annotations are used.
