9 out of 10 Americans
use media prior to
going to sleep which
has been linked to
sleep loss, irregular
sleep-wake pattern,
poor sleep quality, &
worsening tiredness
throughout the day.

EXAMPLES OF ELECTRONIC
DEVICES
HOW DOES MEDIA AFFECT OUR SLEEP?

First the bright television screen, computer screen, and or mobile device screen
decreases melatonin that leads to a delay in falling asleep and a disruption in
sleep. A majority of these devices emit a blue light which also disrupts sleep.

Second media use is a unstructured leisure activity.

Lastly media use has been linked to violent and sexual content that leads to
increased stimulation causes difficulty falling asleep or poor sleep quality.

MAKE?

Switch smartphone to bed mode if available


Adjust smartphone Do Not Disturb during hours of
sleep
Decrease background light
Leave electronic devices out of bedroom
Turn television off
Turn off electronic devices in ample time to allow
for relaxation
