UNIT - III
RANKINE CYCLE
1. Dry saturated steam Find h1 = hg from saturated
pressure steam table
2. Superheated steam Find h1,s1 using superheated steam
table
3. Actual rankine cycle 80%
4. Wet Steam X value will be given. Find h1 by using
formula

5/3/17 T.S.SENTHILKUMAR, AP/MECH 7

REHEAT RANKINE CYCLE
X2 < 1, dry saturated steam. Find h2 by using
formula.
X2 > 1, superheated steam. Find h2 by using mollier
chart.
P2 not given, but it is dry saturated. Then find P2 by
using the value of S2 = Sg in steam table and write
the value of P2.
P2 not given, X4 value is given. Then find P2 by
using mollier chart. First find h1 & h 4 (by using the
value P1 ,T 1 & P4 ,X 4) , h3 and h2 then the value of P2.
5/3/17 T.S.SENTHILKUMAR, AP/MECH 8
REGENERATIVE RANKINE CYCLE
1. One model (single feed water heater)

5/3/17 T.S.SENTHILKUMAR, AP/MECH 9

TO FIND RANKINE CYCLE PROBLEM FROM
QUESTION
In the queston itself they will mention as rankine cycle
TO FIND REHEAT CYCLE PROBLEM FROM THE QUESTION
In the question itself they will mention as reheat rankine cycle or
they will mention as that the steam is reheated up to 5000C.
TO FIND THE REGENERATIVE PROBLEM FROM THE
QUESTION
In the question itself they will mention as regenerative cycle or they
will mention as that the steam is send to feed water heater for
heating.

5/3/17 T.S.SENTHILKUMAR, AP/MECH 10

TO FIND P1 AND P2 IN THE RANKINE CYCLE
PROBLEM
P1 will be always larger than the P2 value in the
rankine cycle problem. So take the largest value
as P1 from the problem and smallest value as P2
in the rankine cycle problem.

5/3/17 T.S.SENTHILKUMAR, AP/MECH 11

TO FIND P1, P2 AND P4 IN THE REHEAT
RANKINE CYCLE PROBLEM (P2 = P3 in reheat)
In reheat rankine cycle problem also the P1 value
will be larger. So take the largest value as P1.
To find P2 in the question they will mention as the
reheated pressure is or the steam from the HP
turbine is reheated at a pressure of, from that
take the value of P2. Some times they will not
give the value of P2 we have to find using mollier
chart or from steam table.
The value of P4 will be smallest value (i.e., 0.0035
bar). Take theT.S.SENTHILKUMAR,
5/3/17 most smallest AP/MECH value as P4. 12
If they give the problem as the reheat rankine
cycle will work between the pressure of 12
bar to 0.05 bar. Take the largest value as P1
and the other value as P4.

For example in question given three pressure

12 bar, 5 bar, 0.005 bar
Take P1 = 12 bar; P2 = 5 bar; P3 = 0.005
bar.
For example in question given three pressure
100 bar, 10 bar, 0.005 bar
5/3/17 T.S.SENTHILKUMAR, AP/MECH 13
TO FIND P1, P2 AND P3 IN THE REGENERATIVE
RANKINE CYCLE PROBLEM
P1 is greater than P2
P2 is greater than P3
So take the largest value as P1. Then take the
smallest value as P2 (but greater than the last
pressure). Then take the least value as P 3
P1>P2>P3; P1>P2; P2>P3
