The Welding Inspector

Is responsible for judging the acceptability of a product

according to a written specification.

The Welding Inspector can be classified as:

Code or governing agency inspector.

Purchasers, Customers, or Owners inspector.

Fabricators, manufacturers, or contractors inspector.

Architects or engineers inspector.

The Welding Inspectors Work functions can be grouped are:

Overseer.

Specialist

Combination overseer-specialist.

Qualities of the Welding Inspector

1) Physical Condition
Good Physical condition.

2) Vision
Near Vision Acuity natural or corrected vision:

20/40
Jaeger J-2 at 12
Color perception red/green, blue/yellow (Optional).

3) Professional Attitude
Success will be dependent upon the cooperation of
associates in all departments..

AWS A3.0 Standard Welding Terms and Definitions.

Weld Geometry and Welding Terminology (Chapter 4).

Welding Metallurgy (Chapter 8)

Weld and Base Metal Discontinuities (Chapter 9).

Nondestructive Examination (Chapter 10).

9) Ability to be Trained
Ability to study.
Expertise in a number of different areas.

10) Inspection Experience


For AWS certification, must show evidence of having
performed the functions of a welding inspector.

Directly involved in one or more of the following:


Design
Production.
Construction.
Inspection.
Repair

Develop and mantain inspection records.
Write concise and accurate reports.
Results of inspections, welding procedures, welder
qualifications, drawing and specifications revisions, etc.

8) Knowledge of Welding Processes


Actual experience as a welder or welding operator is valuable

to a welding inspector, but is not mandatory.

Advantages and limitations of the various welding processes.

agreement as to which welders are consider qualified to
produce satisfactory welds.
WI must indicate when parts or assemblies will be ready for
inspection.
