INTRODUCTION - RAIN PROTECTION

When rain drops form on a Windshield during Flight, the Pilots VISION is
reduced. The rain drops may be removed by WIPING or BLOWING.
BLOWING A third method
of rain removal is by using CHEMICAL RAIN REPELLENTS

Rain is blown from the Windshield of some Aircraft by AIR JETS,

JETS located beneath
the Windshield. On other Aircraft, WINDSHIELD WIPERS are used. They are
constructed Rubber Blades which wipe across the Windshield to remove rain and
slushy ice.

ELECTRICAL WINDSHIELD WIPER SYSTEM

In an Electrical Wiper System, each wiper
blade is driven by an Electric Motor which
receives power from the Aircrafts
Electrical System. The Captain & First
Officer Windshield Wipers are operated by
a separate electrical system. This ensures
that clear vision is maintained through one
of the windows should one system fail.

ROTARY MOTION of the Electrical Motor is

converted to RECIPROCATING MOTION to
operate the Wiper Arm. Different speeds
can be obtained by rotating the control
switch to the required speed. The Wiper
Arm can be positioned clear of the pilots
vision by momentarily holding the control
switch to PARK.

HYDRAULICALLY & PNEUMATICALLY WINDSHIELD WIPER SYSTEM

Pressure from Hydraulic/Pneumatic
Power System:-

Inside the Actuator contains a

Piston that moves a Rack &
Pinion Gear System, and also
alternately connects a Pressure
or Return Line to opposite side
of the Actuator, cause the
Piston to move back and forth.

A SPEED CONTROL VALVE

allows the Pilot to select the
speed at which the wipers will
operates.

PRECAUTION & MAINTENANCE

Never operate Windshield Wipers on a
dry windshield. Do not allow any oil or
grease to come into contact with the
Windscreen or Wiper Blade. Keep the
blades clean and free of any
contaminants to avoid scratches. Blade
rubbers should be replaced at regular
intervals.

For Operational Testing, flood

Windshield with ample quantities of
clean water and keep it wet while the
Wiper Blades are moving.

RAIN REMOVAL

PNEUMATIC RAIN REMOVAL SYSTEM

Windshield Wipers tend to be inefficient
for 2 reasons :
a) The tendency of Airflow to reduce the
Wiper Blade pressure on the window causing
ineffective wiping or streaking.
b) The difficulty in achieving fast enough
wiper action to clear the water during
heavy rain falls.
As a result, most Aircraft Wiper System DO
NOT provide satisfactory vision during
heavy rain. The PNEUMATIC RAIN
REMOVAL SYSTEM uses high pressure,
high temperature Engine Compressor
Bleed Air, which is blown across the
Windshields. The Air Blast forms a
barrier that prevents raindrops from
striking the Windshield surface.

PNEUMATIC RAIN REMOVAL SYSTEM

Used in some Turbine-
powered Aircraft.

High-Pressure compressed
Air is ducted from the Engine
Bleed Air and is directed up
against the outside of the
Windshield as a HIGH
VELOCITY sheet of air.

This air blast the rain away

effectively.

CHEMICAL
RAIN REPELLENT
SYSTEM

CHEMICAL RAIN REPELLENT SYSTEM

When rain water contacts a clean glass windscreen, it spreads out wetting the
glass. Even when the Windshield is at a steep angle, or subjected to air
velocity, the glass remains wetted by a thin layer of water. However, when the
glass Windshield is treated with RAIN REPELLENT, a transparent film is
formed which causes the water to form into beads.

These cover only a portion of the glass and the area between the beads is dry.
The High Velocity of the Airflow continually removes the beads of water,
leaving part of the Windshield dry.

CHEMICAL RAIN REPELLENT SYSTEM

Application of the rain repellent shall
prevent water from reaching the surface of
glass. The use of Rain Repellent is NOT
RECOMMENDED for Light Rain. It consists
of Pressurized Fluid Containers, a Selector
Valve, Solenoid-actuated Valves, Spray
Nozzles, Push Button switches, a Control
Switch, a time-delay Relay, and necessary
Plumbing.
During raining condition, the System is
switched ON and repellent is spread evenly
with the wiper blade. Do not sprayed,
sprayed unless
the windshield is wet and the Wipers are
operated. The effect of the rain repellent
cause the water to form small Globules/
Beads and quickly blown away in Flight.

CHEMICAL RAIN REPELLENT SYSTEM

Rain drops, form an OPAQUE LAYER on
surface of Windscreens, spoiling visibility

After Rain Repellent been applied rain

no longer forms a continuous layer but is
broken up into small globules which are
readily blown off by the airflow.

Repellent Chemically treated Silicone

Fluid applied before Flight, effective when
speed of Aircraft is excess of 50 KNOTS
