ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

& VOTER IDs

Trentin Worsham, Nolan Young, Jon Ray, Emma
Smith
THE ISSUE
In states where they do not require Voter
IDs, illegal immigrants are usually able to
vote with little to no problem, which
distorts the results compared to if just legal
citizens voted. This is an issue in its own
because the US has enough illegal
immigrants to create a serious distortion.
HISTORY OF
US
IMMIGRATIO
THE HISTORY OF IMMIGRATION
Early Congress could not do much to affect
immigration, the state governments controlled
their immigration
1790s: First Naturalization Act was passed
1850s-60s: Anti-Immigrant (the Know-Nothings) and
Pro-Immigrant parties clashed
1882: Chinese Exclusion Act passed
THE HISTORY OF IMMIGRATION
Early 1920s: series of laws were passed to limit the
intake of immigrants
Great Depression: many immigrants went back
home, hundreds of thousands of Mexicans were
forced back
WWII: Germans and Italians detained, Japanese
interned
1942: Mexican farmworkers brought in, then later
THE HISTORY OF IMMIGRATION
1986: Immigration Reform and Control Act passed,
allowing 4 million illegal immigrants paths to
citizenship
1990s: Anti-Immigrant feelings resurged
1992: First detailed national count estimated 3.4
million unauthorized immigrants
2000s: Several Acts passed allowing illegals to
become naturalized
THE HISTORY OF IMMIGRATION
2006: Secure Fence Act authorized fencing along US-
Mexican border
2010: Arizona Bill passed as law, expanding the
state's authority combating illegal immigration
2011: Secure Border Initiative cancelled due to
technical problems
2012-16: President Obama signed and attempted to
expand Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
WHAT WE
KNOW
THE FACTS
The number of illegal immigrants in the US is hard to
pinpoint, but most credible sources state
somewhere over 26.9 million, compared to the
more commonly used 11-12 million that is used in
any mainstream news outlet or website.
Up to 70% of the illegal immigrant population is
located in California according to a California
Census taken in 2015
26.9

Compared to the more commonly used 11-12 million
WHY IS THERE A DISCREPANCY?
This discrepancy comes from the way the data is
obtained, with the latter being derived from
government branches trying to use vague surveys
and estimates based off of the number of
apprehended illegal immigrants. The head of the
border patrol himself debunked the way the
apprehended number of immigrants could be used to
estimate the number of illegal immigrants in the
country.
WHAT MAKES
THIS AN
ISSUE?
WHY ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION HARMS
US
Illegal immigrants, when proper precautions are
not taken, can influence the path of our
nation in a way that benefits them more than
it does the true citizens of our country
They also harm our economy, taking jobs and,
with our current stance to illegal immigrants,
taking money from our taxpayers
The Cost of Illegal Immigration
This graph shows
the approximate
cost per state of
sustaining the
illegal immigration
population of each
state

The total
approximate cost
per year is 84 billion
dollars.
OPPOSING
STANCES
ARGUMENTS AGAINST VOTER
IDs
The largest argument against Voter IDs comes
from the belief that there are many minorities,
poor and old, that cannot afford the necessary
identification to be able to vote in states that
require IDs to vote, as can be seen in the
following video:
A REFUTE TO ARGUMENTS AGAINST
VOTER IDs
In many states, according to http://www.dmv.org, there
is financial support to those who cannot afford even
the documents to allow themselves an ID
Many states have ways to work around requiring an ID,
especially in special circumstances
Many of those lacking an ID are in their situation
because they are not eligible to get an ID or are
simply too lazy to put in the small amount of effort
needed to obtain one
ARGUMENTS FOR OPEN
Those who argue BORDERS
for open borders do so based on
the wellbeing of those coming across the borders
and into the country.
They argue that America is a very well off first-
world country and that it is our duty to share that
prosperity with those who are less well off than
us, and therefore should leave our borders open
so that those who need to can come to our
A REFUTE TO ARGUMENTS FOR
OPEN BORDERS
A key phrase in many arguments for open borders was
that it was a moral argument
There were no facts or empirical data to support the
arguments, it was an opinionated argument
Open borders harm our country by detracting from the
available job market of those citizens that are
already there and are legal
The duty of a country is first to the wellbeing of its
current peoples, not that of other nations
HOW ARE
THESE
ISSUES
ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND
VOTER
In most states, except IDs
California, one must prove
their citizenship before being issued any official
sort of ID, such as a Drivers Licence.
Enforcing strict Voter ID laws in states would keep
illegal immigrants from voting, as they could not
obtain an ID without being a citizen.
They are prevalent enough in our country to sway the
course of our nation for the worse, potentially.
WHAT IS
THE
SOLUTION?
POTENTIAL REMEDIES
Securing our borders with better security, even a
wall, will slow the influx of illegal immigrants
Walls built in European countries experiencing
immigration problems, such as Hungary, built walls
along the borders experiencing the most
immigration
They immediately saw massive drops in the incoming
number of illegal immigrants, going from several
hundred a day, between 300 and 400, to an
estimated 40 per day.
POTENTIAL REMEDIES
CONTINUED
Instituting strict Voter ID laws would block
illegal immigrants from voting and would
most eliminate of their political sway in our
nation
It is also important to show the public reasons
why these fixes are practical and possible,
as many oppose them because of distorted
views
THIS
CHANGE Our borders are our first
line of defense. We try
and fix the problem there,
IS and the other pieces in
the puzzle will fall into

IMPORTA place.
Adding more restrictions

NT to Voter IDs will help in

having more honest
elections and voting by
listening to actual, legal
citizens.
HISTORICAL
BASIS
THE FOUNDING FATHERS
Although the Founding Fathers cannot be
proven to agree with the idea of requiring
Voter IDs,
From their stances on legal immigration,
and the problems that can stem from it,
their views can be assumed to extend to
illegal immigration.
A FOUNDING FATHER
James Madison THAT AGREES
When we are considering the advantages
that may result from an easy mode of
naturalization, we ought also to consider
the cautions necessary to guard against
abuses aliens might acquire the right of
citizenship, and return to the country from
which they came, and evade the laws
intended to encourage the commerce and
industry of the real citizens and inhabitants
of America, enjoying at the same time all
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

This quote warns against the dangers of legal

immigration, stating that immigrants can take
advantage of an easy process of becoming a citizen
of this country, while retaining citizenship of their
home country as well.
Although not explicitly stated, if Madison holds such
a cautious stance to legal immigration, he probably
has the same stance on illegal immigration.
A FOUNDING FATHER
THAT AGREES
Jefferson They will bring with them the principles of the
Thomas
government they leave, imbibed in their early
youth, or, if able to throw them off, it will be in
exchange for an unbounded licentiousness,
passing, as is usual, from one extreme to another. It
would be a miracle were they to stop precisely at
the point of temperate liberty. These principles,
with their language, they will transmit to their
children. In proportion to their numbers they will
share with us the legislation. They will infuse into it
their spirit, warp and bias its direction, and render it
a heterogeneous, incoherent, distracted mass.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Similar to the previous quote, Jefferson warns against

the influence immigrants (including legal) can have
on our nation, especially if theyre coming from
nations with different governments and societies.
Like the Madison quote, Jefferson would probably
have a very cautious stance against illegal
immigration, as this influx of immigrants can be
controlled during legal immigration.
TO CONCLUDE
We believe that requiring Voter IDs and better
protecting our borders will benefit the US
economy and allow for better elected officials
who can better serve the United States and its
interests, leading to a better future for this
generation and those that follow a stance that
would be shared by our Founding Fathers.
