PRIME MINISTER(1917-1984)

Indira gandhi was indias third prime minister, serving from


1966 until 1984, when her life ended in assassination. She
was the daughter of JAWAHARLAL NAHERU, indias first prime
minister.
BACKGROUND

Born:19th
th November 1917

Birth place: Allahabad


Father: Jawaharlal Nehru
Mother: Kamla Nehru
Spouse: Firoz Gandhi (1942-1960)
Children: Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi
EDUCATION
She attained her preliminary education at home after which
she briefly attended school to complete her matriculation.
Indira was enrolled at the Viswa Bharti University in Calcutta
but had to leave the same due to the ailing health of her
mother in Europe.

Post the death of her mother, Indira attended the University


of Oxford in Britain, where she studied history, political
science and economics. However, due to her constant ill-
health, she returned to India without a degree.
PERSONAL LIFE AND LEGACY

Indira Nehru and Feroze Gandhi knew each other since childhood
- this acquaintance slowlymatured into a relationship when both
of them were in the UK for their studies. Her father Jawaharlal
Nehru was strongly opposed to her choice of a husband, but she
bravelyfaced all the opposition to marry Feroze Gandhi. They got
married in March 1942 and were later blessed with two sons -
Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi

Then after, 27th May 1964 death of her father Jawaharlal Nehru.....
At That period, 3rd prime minister is Lal Bahadur Shastri at 9,june
1964

On 11 January 1966 his death


Party elected Indira Gandhi over Morarji Desai to officially
succeed Shastri. Due to a heart attack, but people allege
conspiracy behind the death. He was the first Prime Minister of
India to die overseas. He was eulogised as a national hero and
the Vijay Ghat memorial established in his memory. Upon his
death, Gulzarilal Nanda once again assumed the role of Acting
Prime Minister until the Congress Parliamentary

Indira Gandhi became the Prime Minister of India and continued


to serve the same until 1977.
During her term as Prime Minister, 14 large bank nationalization
She then nationalized the coal, steel, copper, refining, cotton
textiles, and insurance industries.
The main aim of this move was to protect employment and
secure the interest of the organized labor.
It was during Gandhis premiership that Green Revolution brought
remarkable change in the agricultural production in India.
She stabilized major reforms, including strict population control
programs

HER WORK..

In an attempt to honor and pay tribute to the great political


leader, the central government launched the low-cost housing
programmed for the rural poor under her name

Indira Awaas Yojna


The international airport at New Delhi is named Indira Gandhi
International Airport in her honour. She also has one of the
largest universities in the world, Indira Gandhi National Open
University
HER WORKS
As per economic survey, when indira gandhi prime minister,
65% of the country population was below the poverty
line, and when figure is decrease in 1984 was 45%.
And food production increased by 25%
Literacy also increase in India by 30%
HER DEATH

On 31st October 1984, two Sikh bodyguards SATWANT SINGH


and BEANT SINGH killed gandhi by fireguns.
