Text 5:
Emilio took the cap of his head, dropped the baseball bat, and rested his
elbows on the fence. It's not that he couldn't find the ball. It was sitting
right in the middle of the lawn, just beyond the fence. The fence was not
very high either. Emilio could probably get a running start, grab the top
of the fence, and flip right over it. But there was a dog, a large
Rottweiler with a spiked collar. He sat under an awning a few feet away
from the ball. He looked at Emilio and let out a menacing growl. Archie,
Scotty, and Dutch ran up to Emilio and surveyed the situation. Archie
was the first to speak, "So, are you going to do it, Emilio?
Questions:
1. What were the boys doing right before the text begins? How do you know this?

It is most probable that the boys are playing baseball together before the text begins.

Evidence:

Emilio took the cap of his head, dropped the baseball bat, and rested his elbows on the fence.

This line shows that before Emilio stumbled upon the angry Rottweiler dog, he was wearing a cap before he took it off and
was holding a baseball bat before he dropped it, hinting that he was wearing baseball attire to play baseball with his friends.
Questions:
2. What problem is Emilio facing? How do you know this?

From the previous question, we already set a premise that the boys are playing baseball together. Based on the text, the problem Emilio
could be facing would be that when they were playing baseball, the baseball flew away and landed somewhere. Emilio went to search for
the ball and he found it on someones lawn. He wanted to get the ball, but before he made his move, he stumbled upon a large, most
probably angry Rottweiler dog. He was hesitant in making his next move.

Evidence:

Its not that he couldnt find the ball

This line shows that Emilio is in search for the baseball, suggesting that the ball had flown away from the field/place where theyre
playing baseball together.

A large Rottweiler with a spiked collar. & He looked at Emilio with a menacing growl.

This line provides the justification that the dog is very large, of a Rottweiler species (if you Google that, its a dog species often breed as a
police dog). The spiked collar and menacing growl of the dog shows that the dog is alarmed my Emilios presence, and that it might chase
after Emilio if he makes another move.
Questions:
3. Why is this problem Emilio's instead of Archie's, Scotty's, or Dutch's? How do you know this?

So far, we know that the ball went missing, and that the boys were searching for the ball. It is Emilios problem mainly because
it was him who found the ball and not his friends, but at the same time, that puts him in the dangerous position with the dog.

Evidence:

Archie, Scotty and Dutch ran up to Emilio and surveyed the situation.

This line suggests that Emilio arrived at the lawn before the rest of his friends. When they arrived at the scene, they tried to
analyse the situation that Emilio is in.

Archie was the first to speak, "So, are you going to do it, Emilio?

This line provides the evidence that Emilios friends are asking Emilio if hes willing to make the daring move of getting the
ball at the expense of putting his life in danger of the dog. This shows that they are expecting him to make said move since he
found the ball first.
Text 7:
Anastasia sat by the fountain in the park with her head in her palms. She
was weeping mournfully and wearing all black. In between gasps and
sobs, Anastasia cried out a name: OhJohn And then her cell
phone beeped. Her hand ran into her purse and her heart flustered. The
text message was from John. She opened up the message and read the
few bare words, I need to get my jacket back from you. Anastasia
threw her head into her arms and continued sobbing.
Questions:
1. What relationship do John and Anastasia have? How do you know this?

John and Anastasia would most probably have a very close and intimate relationship. For example, they can be close partners,
or even married couples.

Evidence:

And then her cell phone beeped. Her hand ran into her purse and her heart flustered.

This line suggests the idea that John and Anastasia are in a very close relationship. It is a fair assumption to say that if
receiving a message from John made Anastasias heart fluster, then it can be guessed that receiving a message from John
means a lot to Anastasia.

In between gasps and sobs, Anastasia cried out a name: OhJohn

This line further justifies the premise that both of them are very close to one another. The fact that Anastasia is crying and
sobbing while saying out Johns name shows that John mustve been an important and meaningful figure in her life.
Questions:
2. Why is Anastasia sad? How do you know this?

In this question, we identified two possible explanations as to why Anastasia was feeling sad. The first explanation is that John
had passed away. The second explanation is less dramatic per se; that John and Anastasia had a break up.

Evidence (First Explanation):

She was weeping mournfully and wearing all black

This line is a large contributor to the first premise. It suggests that Anastasia is mourning, possibly over the loss of a loved one,
and the fact that shes wearing all black shows that she was probably attending a funeral, in this case, most probably Johns
funeral.

She opened up the message and read the few bare words, I need to get my jacket back from you. Anastasia threw her head
into her arms and continued sobbing.

This line is rather open to further interpretation. For the first explanation, one can interpret this to further enhance said premise
by justifying that John wanted to get his jacket back from Anastasia, and that he might be on his way to her house. Something
mustve happened during the journey, for example, an accident. After reading the message, Anastasia continued sobbing. The
message doesnt necessarily have to be recently sent. It couldve been sent by John the day of the accident, but due to
complications, it arrived late. We often see this in the movies, but the cons of this explanation is that its a bit of a slippery
slope.
Questions:
2. Why is Anastasia sad? How do you know this?

In this question, we identified two possible explanations as to why Anastasia was feeling sad. The first explanation is that John
had passed away. The second explanation is less dramatic per se; that John and Anastasia had a break up.

Evidence (Second Explanation):

She was weeping mournfully and wearing all black

If we negate the fact that shes wearing all black for funeral purposes, then it can also be said that Anastasia was sad because
of a break up with John. To mourn, albeit suitable to be used for the loss of someone, can be interpreted as simply that
Anastasia was really sad and heartbroken.

She opened up the message and read the few bare words, I need to get my jacket back from you. Anastasia threw her head
into her arms and continued sobbing.

Again, as stated before, this line is open to another set of interpretation. When analysed, it could be that John texted Anastasia
to get his jacket back from her, as he gave it to her when they were still together. Now that theyve separated, John wanted
whats his. Reading this message made Anastasias sadness to escalate, as she threw her head into her arms and continued
sobbing.
