by placing the thumb or finger of
your non-dominant hand on the

Squeeze 2cm of ointment into


the conjunctival sac from inner
canthus to outer canthus.

the eyelids but not to
squeeze them shut

nasolacrimal duct for at
least 30 seconds

comfortable position for ear
drops, lying with the ear
being treated uppermost

hand

Straighten the auditory canal.

Instill the correct number of dorps


along the side of the ear canal

Press gently but firmly a few


times on the tragus of the ear

Ask the client to remain in side-lying


position for about 5 minutes
Insert the small piece of cotton
fluff loosely at the meatus of
the auditory canal for 15 to 20
minutes

Nasal Instillations

Instruct the client to blow


the nose to clear the nasal
passages
Ask the client to assume a back-
lying position
Place a pillow under the
shoulders, allowing the
head to fall over the edge
of the pillow
Nasal Instillations
Elevate the nares slightly by
pressing the thumb against
the tip of the clients nose
Hold the dropper just above the
clients nostrils and direct the drops
toward the midline of the superior
concha of the ethmoid bone

Avoid touching the mucus


membrane of the nostriol

Ask the client to:


Inhale deeply through the nose
Hold the breath for several
seconds and then exhale
slowly
Remain in the back lying position
for 1 minute

Discard any medication
remaining in the dropper
returning the dropper to the
bottle
