 BRIEF PROFILE OF SAMSUNG HEAVY
INDUSTRIES (SHI)
Samsung Heavy Industries was established in 1974, when the
company's Changwon plant was opened. SHI soon purchased Woojin,
followed by the construction of Geoje shipbuilding facilities and
merger with Daesung Heavy Industries.
Samsung Shipbuilding and Daesung Heavy Industries were merged
under Samsung Heavy Industries in 1983. Since then, it has put
efforts in the introduction of new technologies and development of
products, while expanding the business area into heavy equipment
and construction.
Since the 21st century, SHI began to build LNG and large passenger
ships in earnest, and exported shipbuilding technologies to the United
States. Samsung Heavy Industries decided to advance into the cruise
ship market, the last remaining stronghold of EU shipbuilders. The
company stated entering the undertaking was necessary to maintain
its number one position in the global shipbuilding market. In 2009, SHI
was contracted to build a new residential cruise ship named Utopia,
which will be the largest passenger ship ever assembled in Asia.

Laying of the underground pipe had to be done before the foundation was casted. The
purpose of the laid pipe was to convey and to protect the electrical cable to each sump-
pit and also to all other equipments used for the project.

We did pull cables on pipe rack from the different panels being installed to the Direct
Digital Controller (DDC) where it is been controlled

Proper measurement was been taken so as to allow for accurate fixing of the device and
panels

This involves fixing cables into panels
 CHALLENGES

ChallengesthatIwasconfrontedwithatmyworksitetheweremainlycentredon
notbeingconversantwiththetoolsanddevices.Thiswasputincheckviathe
interventionofmysuperiorsandsupervisorthroughdiscussion.Also,the8working
hourswasnotsoeasy.
TherewerealsotimeswhenIhavetoworkovertimeandunderpressuredueto
thefactthattheprojecthadadeadlineforittobedelivered.MoreEngineerswere
howeverbroughtonduringthecourseofmystay.
OneofthemajorpointsinmyITwashavingtoworkwithexpatriates,thisreally
broadenedmyknowledgewiththeprojectandalsogettingtoknowandlearntheir
culture.
 CONCLUSION
This industrial training has afforded me the basic practical and theoretical knowledge that I
may not have gotten from the lecture room. It also gave me the opportunity to have a feel of
what it would be like after graduation when I start working.
After my internship with SAMSUNG HEAVY INDUSTRIES:
I can effectively interpret work drawings.
I can effectively make terminations on panels.
I can carry out inspection and repair works on panels.
I can take readings from panels.
I can make conduit pipes bending accurately.
Other benefits include:
Good working ethics: As a result of the close working relationship I had with my
supervisor, I have been able to imbibe good working ethics. These ethics includes been able
to handle situation with little or no help, being able to provide solutions to lingering
problems, etc.
Career Path: I have been able to use this training to explore various avenues available at
my disposal career-wise. It has given me the opportunity to have a look into the future and
access my readiness for employment or entrepreneurship. Finally the internship has bridged
the gap between academic theory and practical and has built a good degree of confidence
especially in my abilities to perform. It has also given me a first-hand experience on field
