EARTHQUAKE ZONE 3

EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT STRUCTURES
Earthquake-resistant
structures are structures designed to
withstand earthquakes. While no structure can be
entirely immune to damage from earthquakes, the
goal of earthquake-resistant construction is to erect
structures that fare better during seismic activity
than their conventional counterparts.
EARTHQUAKE ZONES OF INDIA
The Indian subcontinent has a history of devastating earthquakes. The major
reason for the high frequency and intensity of the earthquakes is that the Indian
plate is driving into Asia at a rate of approximately 47 mm/year. Geographical
statistics of India show that almost 54% of the land is vulnerable to earthquakes.
A World Bank & United Nations report shows estimates that around 200 million
city dwellers in India will be exposed to storms and earthquakes by 2050. The
latest version of seismic zoning map of India given in the earthquake resistant
design code of India [IS 1893 (Part 1) 2002] assigns four levels of seismicity for
India in terms of zone factors. In other words, the earthquake zoning map of India
divides India into 4 seismic zones (Zone 2, 3, 4 and 5) unlike its previous version,
which consisted of five or six zones for the country. According to the present
zoning map, Zone 5 expects the highest level of seismicity whereas Zone 2 is
associated with the lowest level of seismicity.
EARTHQUAKE ZONE 3
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, parts of Kashmir,
Western Himalayas fall under this zone. This zone is
classified as Moderate Damage Risk Zone which is liable to
MSK VII. and also 7.8 The IS code assigns zone factor of 0.16
for Zone 3.
ANDAMAN ISLANDS
The 2009 Andaman Islands
earthquake occurred on August 11 at 19:55 UTC in
the Andaman Islands of India. The earthquake
magnitude was recorded as 7.5 Mw, and was the
strongest in the region since the 2004 Indian
Ocean earthquake and tsunami. The epicentre was
260 km north of Port Blair, and tremors were felt
in south-east India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and
Thailand. ThePacific Tsunami Warning
Center issued a tsunami watch to India, Myanmar,
Bangladesh, Indonesia and Thailand, but it was
later lifted. No casualties or injuries were
reported, although there were complaints about
minor damage to buildings. At about the same time,
the 2009 Shizuok earthquake affected south
Honsh in Japan.
KASHMIR
The 2005 Kashmir earthquake occurred at 08:50:39 Pakistan
Standard Time on 8 October in the Pakistani territory of Azad Kashmir.
The earthquake also affected countries in the surrounding region
where tremors were felt in Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Chinese Xinjiang.
The severity of the damage caused by the earthquake is attributed to
severe upthrust.
There were many secondary earthquakes in the region, mainly to the
northwest of the original epicentre. A series of strong aftershocks
occurred near Muzaffarabad. As of 27 October 2005 there had been
more than 978 aftershocks with a magnitude of 4.0 and above that
continued to occur daily. Since then, measurements from satellites
have shown that mountain parts directly above the epicenter have risen
by a few meters, giving ample proof that the rising of the Himalayas is
still going on, and that this earthquake was a consequence of that.
