Transmitting power over long distances by overhead
transmission lines or submarine cables
at high voltage and in DC form instead of AC is a new
technology proven to be economic and simple in operatio
n which is HVDC transmission.

Since our primary source is A.C.,the three basic steps

are:-
1. Convert AC into DC (rectifier)
2. Transmit DC
3. Convert DC into AC (inverter)
MATLAB (matrix laboratory) is a multi-paradigm
numerical computing environment and fourth-
generation programming language.

MATLAB allows matrix manipulations, plotting of

functions and data, implementation of algorithms.

By using MATLAB, we can construct a model, select the

different components from Simulink library, connect
them, set the time period, and start Simulation.

CONVERTERS
Perform AC/DC (rectifier) and DC/AC (inverter) conversion
consist of bridges and transformers

SMOOTHING REACTORS

Decrease harmonics in voltages and currents in DC lines.

Prevent current from being discontinuous.

HARMONIC FILTERS

Used to reduce harmonics (in voltages and currents) caused

by converters which generate harmonics,
Hence prevent from interference with any system.
REACTIVE POWER SUPPLIES
Converter may consume reactive power of about 50% / more of
active power.
Reactive power is, therefore, provided near converter.
For a strong AC power system, this reactive power is provided by a
shunt capacitor.

ELECTRODES
Used to provide connection to the earth for neutral.

DC LINES
They may be overhead lines or cables.
DC lines are very similar to AC lines.

CIRCUIT BREAKERS
Used to break circuit if fault occurs in the transformer and for taking the
DC link out of service.
Advantages of HVDC

Technical Economic
Advantages Advantages
Lesser Corona Loss and Radio interference.

No skin and proximity and ferranti effect.

More power per conductor.

DC lines and cables are cheaper than AC lines
or cables.

The towers of the DC lines are narrower,

simpler and cheaper compared to the towers
of the AC lines.

Line losses in a DC line are lower than the

losses in an AC lines.
The disadvantages of HVDC are in conversion,
switching, control, availability and maintenance.

Difficulty in stepping up/down voltage. No dc

transformer.

The required converter stations are expensive and

have limited overload capacity.

Converters need large reactive power.

Long distance high power transmission by
overhead lines.

Medium and long high power submarine or

underground cables.

Frequency conversion (60 Hz 50Hz ; 50Hz

25Hz).
Chandrapur Padghe HVDC transmission system
(Length - 752 km, Power rating - 1,500 MW, DC
voltage - 500 kV)

TalcherKolar HVDC system (Length - 1,450 km,

Power rating - 2000 MW, DC voltage - 500 kV)

Rio Madeira HVDC system from Porto Velho to

Araraquara (Length - 2,375 km, Power rating - 2 x
3150 MW, DC voltage - 600 kV)
HVDC offers powerful alternative to increase stability of
a power system, with it power flow can be controlled
rapidly and accurately.

Use of HVDC to interconnect two points in a power grid,

in many cases is the best economic alternative and
further more it has excellent environmental benefits.

Very large investment for example in China and India

shows that HVDC very important in future especially in
big, new industrial countries.
