Impact Test

GS E&C India Pvt. Ltd.

Impact Test

A test conducted to calculate how tough a material is at a

specified temperature.

This is done by calculating corresponding energy required

to cause fracture under shock loading.

Low toughness is associated with brittle shear fracture and

high toughness is associated with ductile plastic tearing.
Need of Impact Test

Sudden and complete failure of material at stresses well

below their yield strength may occur at subzero
temperatures.
Factors Which contribute to Brittle Fracture

Stress Concentration
Low temperature (Often sub zero)
High Strain rate or Rapid rate of loading
Types of Impact Test

As per ASTM there are two standardized impact t

esting approaches:
1.The Charpy Test
2.The Izod Test
The two tests differ mainly in how the specimen is
supported during the impact loading. In the Charp
y test the specimen is supported as a simple-bea
m while in the Izod test the specimen is supported
as a cantilever-beam.
Transition Temperature Curve
This curve gives the range of temp. where a material chan
ges its behavior from ductile to brittle.

UG-20 f
Impact testing as per UG-84 is not mandatory for
Pressure vessel material that satisfies requirements
given as follows.
Limits of thickness of material under P No.1, Gr. No. 1, 2.
Hydrostatic testing as per code
Design Temp. limit (max. 3450C min. -290C)
Thermal or mechanical shock loading is not controlling
design requirement.
Cyclic loading is not controlling design requirement.
UG-84
UG-84 gives requirements of impact test for
pressure vessel material specimen.

Impact test temperature reduction below MDMT
UCS-66
This clause clarifies the requirement of impact test
for a particular combination of thickness and
MDMT, of pressure vessel material.
(Refer Fig. UCS-66)
Reduction in MDMT without Impact testing
When coincident ration is < 1 (as defined in
previous fig.) the component can be used fo
r colder MDMT without impact testing.
For MDMT -550F (-480C)impact testing is r
equired for all materials, except for those ha
ving MDMT not colder than -1550F (-1050C
), and the coincident ratio is less than 0.35
Rules to determine lowest MDMT Without
