The Affect of Sugar

and Salt on the

Boiling Point of Water
By Alex, Biana, Rohan,
and Abhi
A flask
Materials Two cups with salt(B)
sugar(A),
Two beakers filled with
250 mL of water
A protractor for leveling
out the solutes
Two portion cups, one
for sugar and one for
salt,
Two celsius
thermometers
A hot plate
Our Essential Question
How does adding table sugar
and table salt affect the boiling
point of water?
Formulas for the two solutes,
and solvent
Table sugar: C12H22O11

Table salt: NaCl

Water: H2O

Boiling point of water: 100oC

Purpose
To see how the table sugar and table salt affect the
temperature boiling water.
To see the changes of the temperature of the affected
water
To see what solute dissolved and disappeared in the
water better
Change in boiling point when
sugar or salt are added
Solute Change of temperature in oC Final in OC

(Solution)

Salt +2 102

Sugar -3 97
Precision!

We made sure the amounts of sugar and salt were equal before
we put them into the water.
Masses of the Portions Cups using
an electric balance
Portion cup Mass(in grams) Change in portion cup
to portion cup with
solute in grams

Portion cup/w nothing 10.8 No change.

Portion cup with sugar 22.7 22.7-10.8= 11.9

Portion cup with salt 27.3 27.3-10.8=16.5

Pouring the salt into the water
Color changes to into a foggy grey color, but then clears up
after the salt dissolves.
Saltwater becomes a solution
Physical Property of water changes from 100 oC to 102 oC.
Pouring the sugar into the
water
See how the sugar dissolves into the water and turns it into a
clear shade
The sugar water becomes a solution, which is the water mixed
with the dissolved sugar
The sugar affected the water by decreasing its boiling point, the
physical property of water, to 97 oC.
Analysis of the Data Table
Salt increased the temperature
Sugar decreased the temperature
Salt increased the intensity of the heat
Sugar decreased the intensity of heat
Conclusion
In conclusion, the effect of adding table sugar and salt to
water does affect the boiling point of the water. The sugar
causes the temperature of the boiling water to drop, and salt
causes the boiling water to rise.
