Definition of Lambda () Value
Air quantity effectively available in combustion chamber
Lambda () =
Air quantity necessary for complete combustion of the
gasoline in the combustion chamber

Lambda > 1: Excess air, lean mixture

Lambda = 1: Exact quantity of air for complete combustion,

stoichiometric mixture

Lambda < 1: Excess gasoline, rich mixture

Calculation of Lambda According to Brettschneider
Emission of Petrol Vehicles, Sales Meeting 2000, 0500-7

Lambda = A1 . A2 with
the following simplifications are done,

x = Ambient air humidity in kg water vapour / kg air = very low

A1 = 1
WCV = Ratio of water to carbon (fuel) = 0
OCV = Atomar ratio of oxygen to carbon in the fuel = 0.0175
HCV = Atomar ratio of hydrogen to carbon in the fuel = 1.7261
K = Water-gas equilibrium constant = 3.5
K1 = Conversion factor for NDIR-HC-values (in ppm n-Hexan)
to FID-equivalent values (% vol C1) ≈ 6. 10-4
NO = Nitrogen monoxide ≈ opp. at idle

21
A1 = CO/CO2
21 + 50 x .
K + CO/CO2

K OCV . WCV
CO2 + CO/2 + O2 +NO/2 + (HCV/4 . - ) (CO2 + CO) - .
(...)
K + CO/CO2 2 2
A2 =
(1 +HCV/4 - OCV/2) . (CO2 + CO + K1 . HC)

Lambda & AFR relation

Lambda
Most practical AFR devices actually measure the amount of residual oxygen (for lean
mixes) or unburnt hydrocarbons (for rich mixtures) in the exhaust gas. Lambda (λ) is
the measure of how far from stoichiometry that mixture is. Lambda of 1.0 is at
stoichiometry, rich mixtures are less than 1.0, and lean mixtures are greater than 1.0.
There is a direct relationship between lambda and AFR. To calculate AFR from a given
lambda, multiply the measured lambda by the stoichiometric AFR for that fuel.
Alternatively, to recover lambda from an AFR, divide AFR by the stoichiometric AFR for
that fuel. This last equation is often used as the definition of lambda:
Lambda=AFR/AFR stoich.
Because the composition of common fuels varies seasonally, and because many
modern vehicles can handle different fuels, when tuning, it makes more sense to talk
about lambda values rather than AFR
Stoich for different fuels are
Gasoline (Petrol) =14.7
Diesel=14.6
Methane=6.4
Ethanol=9.1
Propane (LPG) =15.5
Natural Gas (CNG)=17.2
Hydrogen=34

Significant of COcorr, HCcorrec & Dilution.

COcorr is a calculated value (using Co and CO2 measured values as per below formula) to
check whether there is a dilution or not.

Use of COcorrec: Compare the actual

measured CO value and the COcorr value.

•If both values were the same there is no dilution

•If both values were different there is a dilution

This calculation will work as soon as the

measured CO value > 0 (see formula).

We speak about dilution if the exhaust gas is mixed up with air which does not come out from
the combustion. Possible causes for a dilution could be:
Leakage (e.g. hole) in the exhaust pipe & Pulsing of an exhaust system.

That means: Every 4 stroke engine has 4 working stroke – Intake, Compression, Power, & Exhaust

For low cylinder engines (1 cylinder 4 stroke bikes) it is possible that during the strokes 1, 2, 3
fresh air is sucked in on the back of the exhaust pipe. 25.02.18 | Page 9
