INTRODUCTION

• Increasing cost and demand of energy has led many

organizations to find smart ways for monitoring,
controlling and saving energy.

• A smart Energy Management System (EMS) can

contribute towards cutting the costs while still meeting
energy demand.

• The emerging technologies of Internet of Things (IoT)

and Big Data can be utilized to better manage energy
consumption in residential, commercial, and industrial
sectors.
• This paper presents an Energy Management System
(EMS) for smart homes. In this system, each home device
is interfaced with a data acquisition module that is an IoT
object with a unique address resulting in a large mesh
wireless network of devices.
• The data acquisition System on Chip (SoC) module
collects energy consumption data from each device
of each smart home and transmits the data to a
centralized server for further processing and analysis.

• This information from all residential areas

accumulates in the utility’s server as Big Data.

• The proposed EMS utilizes off-the-shelf Business

Intelligence (BI) and Big Data analytics software
packages to better manage energy consumption and
to meet consumer demand.
TECHNOLOGIES USED

• IOT (Internet Of Things)

Data Acquisition Module The data acquisition module has two functions
namely, monitoring function and controlling function.

• Big Data Analytics

A highly scalable storage server is used as data warehouse for storing the edge
devices’ sensor data and user information . It can handle the generated Big Data
from residential units as well as scale up to more residential areas that can be
added in future.

• BI (Business Intelligence)
An off-the-shelf business intelligence software tool was utilized to make smart
decisions from the received big data.

Paper1: Smart Home Energy Management System Including
Renewable Energy Based on ZigBee and PLC .
• Paper proposes a smart HEMS architecture that
considers
 Energy consumption &
 Generation simultaneously.

• ZigBee modules  used to monitor the energy

consumption of home appliances and lights.

• A PLC-based renewable energy gateway  is used to

monitor the energy generation of renewable energies.

• The home server  gathers the energy consumption

and generation data, analyzes them for energy
estimation, and controls the home energy use schedule
to minimize the energy cost.
Paper2: Home Energy Management System for Electricity
Cost Savings and Comfort Preservation
In the house resides CSS which is responsible for making decisions that will
reduce electricity cost.

There are five modules in CSS:

• Monitoring (monitors states of entities and obtain external system data)
• Service
• Device configuration (maintains information about the entities and external
systems),
• Policy/goal/constraint management (maintains policies, goals, and
constraints)
• User interface generation (generates user interface according to the entity
descriptions and functions)
• Energy management (decides the best action to take in response to
events).

Once the decision is reached, CSS send control requests to the devices. CSS is
also connected to external systems including DSO and a weather service.
Paper3: A Home Energy Management System for Energy-
Efficient Smart Homes
• In this paper, we describe HEMS for an
energy-efficient smart home.
• First, the energy consumption data for a
smart home are collected using the SPs and
analyzed by the HEMS.
• And energy conservation services, such as
DR and RTP, are automatically or manually
provided through the HEMS and SPs.
• Using the proposed scheme, users can
reduce the energy cost and energy
management services for smart homes can
be provided more easily and efficiently.
Paper4: TOU-Based Optimal Energy Management
for Smart Home
• The SHEMS works well in a smart home equipped with various
appliances and multiple energy resources under TOU
environment.
• Different kinds of appliances are coordinated to minimize the
total payment with comfort guaranteed.
• Models are improved and the value of stored energy is
considered.
• More than 31% of total payments can be saved, including
nonprice profits and price profits, which implies that SHEMS
can reduce payment even the price is fixed.
• Social energy saving and emission reduction also can be
realized.
• The SHEMS can shift loads but cannot shave peak with TOU
only, so methods like peak limitation are required.
• The price difference between peak and off-peak influences the
operation of appliances, especially the fuel cell and battery for
their controllability. There is a saturation for the impacts.
