The optimal DO concentration for iron oxidation was found to be between 1.5 to 4.1 mg.L-1.
The use of elevated DO concentrations (above 4.1 mg.L-1) inhibited the ferrous oxidation
rates. This inhibition effect increased progressively as the DO was increased above 4.1
mg.L-1. Due to the sensitivity of Sulfolobus to elevated dissolved oxygen, the used of
oxygen-enriched air to overcome low solubilities in tank bioleaching reactors at high
temperatures will have to be strictly controlled.
The optimal CO2 concentration for ferrous iron oxidation is predicted to be between 7% and
17%. The iron oxidation rates were
