One of Strategies Doing Scientific Research

This study uses Quasi Experimental method

that is by giving a treatment against two
classes. In experiment class, students are
taught through a learning approach of Science
Technology Society (STS) while in control
class, students are taught without Science
Technology Society (STS).
Location and Time of Research

The location of this research is in one school in Medan

city

Population and Sample of

Research

Population
The population in this Sample
research is all students Sampling is done
of class VIII of the purposively to take
school, which control class and
amounted to 8 classes experiment class.
Variable of Research

Independent variable, that is application of learning

approach of Science Technology Society (STS).

Dependent variable, that is student’s chemical

learning outcomes

Controlled variable, there are:

Teacher who teach is same
Material taught is same
Student handbook is same
Pre-test and post-test are same
Research instruments

The research instrument used in this study is an

objective test with the number of options there are
four and as many as 25 questions first tested the
validity and reliability. This test instrument is used
at the time of pretest and postest. To measure the
homogeneity of the initial ability of the
experimental class and the control class is used
pretest while the posttest is used to determine the
student's final ability. This test is carried out early
and at the end of the learning to see how much
improvement in student learning outcomes
This test is based on the educational unit level curriculum on
the subject of food addictive substances and according to the
taxonomy of bloom

Data Collection Techniques

Data obtained and collected from student learning

outcomes taken by giving tests to students. To collect
data about the results of students learning class VIII,
then used the ability test in the form of multiple choice.
Before tested then first seen the characteristics of the
test.

Research Procedure

The research design used in this study is the initial test

design and the final test of the control class and
experimental class.

class Pre test treatment Post test

K T1 X2 T2
Research Procedure

1. Procedures or research steps are as follows

2. Determine the study population
3. Formed two groups of samples taken purposively, to
take the experimental class of experimental class
4. Carry out preliminary tests (pre test)in both groups to
prove the homogeneity of the two student classes
before treatment is given
5. To test the normality and homogeneity test on the
student pre test data
Research Procedure

 Give an instruction treatment for both classes, where

learning activity through learning approach application of
science technology society (STS) is applied in experiment
class and learning activity without learning approach
application of STS is applied in control class.
 Commit a final test (post-test) to know student’s chemistry
learning outcome after given a treatment.
 Commit normality test, homogeneity test, statistic test ,
hypothesis test, and calculation of student’s improvement
percent of learning outcome
Data Analysis Technique

 Normality Test, used by using the Liliefors test

 Homogenity Test, aims to test the similarity of two
variances.
 Hypothesis Test, tested by a one-party test (right-hand
test).
 Percent (%) of Increase in Learning Outcomes, can be
calculated by the g factor formula (normalized gain
score). G factor formula used to know the acquisition of
student learning outcomes. The percentage increase in
learning outcomes can be directly searched from the
average gain of all students for each class.
