 Land Contamination
Contaminated Land Management and Control Guidelines,
Department of Environment Malaysia (JASM, 2009):

“Contaminant” means any direct or indirect alteration of the
physical, chemical, biological or radiological properties of the soil
and groundwater by discharging, emitting, or depositing
environmentally hazardous substances, pollutants or wastes that
affect adversely the beneficial use of a land and cause a condition
which is hazardous or potentially hazardous to human health and
safety; and environmental well being.
“Contaminated Land” means a site at which substances occur at
concentrations:
 Above natural occurring metal concentrations and pose or are
likely to pose an immediate or long term hazard to human health
or the environment, or
 Exceed concentrations specified in the Site Screening Levels.




 the people are getting lead poisoning

The lead acid battery cases

 Lead Poisoning in Bajos de Haina

 Nearly the entire population of people in Bajos de Haina are
showing sign of lead poisoning due to an abandoned lead-acid
(car) battery smelter that is near the community.
 The people caused it because they put the smelter in the
community.
 They put the smelter there to extract metal from its or in the
batteries, but the batteries were improperly recycled.


contaminated are found with fatal
levels of lead in their blood

-seizure
-learning deficiencies
- reduce IQ
-anemia
-memory loss
- increase blood pressure
