Television

 The television is an invention


that over 98.5% of families
have in their house today.
 The TV is mostly used for
entertainment. Bt it also shows
news that informs people what is
happening locally and around the
world.
 The TV is also one of the
biggest advertisers using
commercials in between
shows.
Television’s Origin
Brief History:
There was no single inventor of the television, there were many
inventors working on the idea of watching pictures on a screen

Inventors from all over the world had been working on transmitting
pictures or objects onto a screen since the 1830’s, but the first
physical television didn’t evolve until the 1900’s.

Five men became the most popular and prestigious
inventors of what we know today as television.

They contributed significantly to the


development of television
technology.
Mechanical vs. Electronic

• Television history there were two distinct paths of technology


experimented by researchers.

• Early inventors attempted to either build a mechanical television


system based on the technology of rotating disks.
• they attempted to build an electronic television system using a
cathode ray tube.
• Electronic television systems worked better and eventual replaced
mechanical systems.
ENVIROMENT ASPECTS

•Many LCD TVs use lamps that contain mercury so they


are harder to dispose of.
•People don’t know how to dispose of televisions
properly. Now there is a big concern about
electronic waste.
•The newer TVs are requiring more electrical power to
run.
The First TV’s

 Monochrome (black & white)

 Sold for about fifty-five dollars, which only people of


wealth could afford

 You could only watch a play on a screen the size of a


dollar coin. The actors also had to take turns in front of
the camera, because the screen was only big enough to
see one person at a time.
Today’s TV’s

• Color (high definition, blue ray)

• Popular TV Stations (ESPN, ABC, FOX, A&E TV, CBS)

• Over the Past 10 Years the Median Size of the Average


TV has increased from 34 inches to 48 inches

• Average of 3 minute long commercial breaks

• Advertising revenue provides a significant portion of the


funding for most television networls
SOCIETY ASPECTS

• More people are becoming less active and obese because of


TVs. Instead of exercising more people are staying home and
watching television.

• TV can influence the way people think, and manipulate


their decisions.

• Children are becoming more obese and lazy. In 1963, 4.5%


of children ages 6 to 11 were seriously overweight; by 2009,
this percentage had more than tripled.

• TV influences a lot of violence to viewers in shows and


movies. 80% of Hollywood executives think there is a
link between TV violence and real-life violence.
Impact

• Television has changed our lives in a number of ways. It has


has some positive effects with regards to education,
entertainment and providing current world events closer to the
people.

• However, there have been some negative effects that television


has brought. This is especially evident in the social and health
aspects. People who spend a lot of time watching TV also
become more accustomed to a lethargic lifestyle and interact
less with people.

• Competition between Internet and Television

• Narrow down to 3 channels

• Netflix, Video on Demand – BlockBusters closed down
