AEROSOLS
WHAT ARE AEROSOLS
• An aerosol is a suspension of
fine solid particles or liquid
droplets, in air or
another gas. Aerosols can be natural
or anthropogenic. Examples of natural
aerosols are fog, dust,
forest exudates and geyser steam.
Examples of anthropogenic aerosols
are haze, particulate air
• In general
conversation, aerosol usually
refers to an aerosol spray that
delivers a consumer product from
a can or similar container. Other
technological applications of
aerosols include dispersal of
pesticides, medical treatment of
• An aerosol is defined as a suspension system of
solid or liquid particles in a gas. An aerosol
includes both the particles and the suspending
gas, which is usually air. Frederick G.
Donnan presumably first used the
term aerosol during World War I to describe an
aero-solution, clouds of microscopic particles
in air. This term developed analogously to the
term hydrosol, a colloid system with water as
the dispersed medium. Primary aerosols contain
particles introduced directly into the
gas; secondary aerosols form through gas-to-
particle conversion.

SOME EXAMPLES OF THESE ARE:
Aerosol paint
Aerosol paint (also called spray paint) is a type
of paint that comes in a sealed pressurized
container and is released in an aerosol spray when
depressing a valve button. A form of spray
painting, aerosol paint leaves a smooth, evenly
coated surface, unlike many traditional rolled or
brushed paints. Standard sized cans are
lightweight, portable, cheap, and easy to store.
Aerosol primer can be applied directly to bare
metal and many plastics.
DEODORANT
A deodorant is a substance applied to the body to
prevent body odor caused by the bacterial breakdown
of perspiration in armpits, feet, and other areas of the
body. A subgroup of deodorants, antiperspirants, affect
odor as well as prevent sweating by affecting sweat
glands. Antiperspirants are typically applied to
the underarms, while deodorants may also be used on
feet and other areas in the form of body sprays.
REMEMBER
•Aerosol science covers generation and
removal of aerosols, technological
application of aerosols, effects of
aerosols on the environment and
people, and a wide variety of other
topics.
