ROLES.

Know the difference between gender

equality and gender equity.

Know the GENDER ISSUES

Gender Sensitivity
is the ability to recognize gender
issues, especially women’s different
perceptions and interests arising
from their unique social location
and gender roles.

It calls for an understanding and

consideration of the socio-cultural
factors underlying discrimination
based on sex (whether against
women or men!).
Gender Sensitivity

Is the act of being aware

of the ways people think
about gender, so that individuals rely less on
assumptions about traditional and outdated views
on the roles of men and women.

It hopes to develop respect for the

individual regardless of sex.
Important points:

1. Not war between the sexes;

2. Not anti-male;

3. Both women & men are victims but

more are women;

4. Both MEN and WOMEN have stake.

Objective 4:
GENDER ISSUES
"The emotional, sexual, and psychological
stereotyping of females begins when the
doctor says,
"It's a girl.'”

-Shirley Chisholm
1. Gender Enequality

Unequal power and

opportunities
between men and
women in terms of
labor, migration,
politics and
governance, health
and nutrition.
2. GENDER STEREOTYPING

An over-generalized belief in the

characteristics of a person based simply
on their gender.

A belief that all males and females

possess distinct psychological and
behavioral traits.
3. Gender Discrimination
Discrimination based
on gender or sex is a
common civil rights
violation.
Discrimination on the
basis of gender takes many
forms; including
sexual harassment,
pregnancy discrimination,
and unequal pay for women
who do the same jobs as
men.

5. Gender-based Violence

1 in 3 women will
experience
gender-based
violence
in her lifetime.
Gender –based violence
physical,
sexual and psychological violence such as domestic
violence;
sexual abuse, including rape and sexual abuse of children
by family members;
forced pregnancy; sexual slavery;
traditional practices harmful to women, such as honor
killings, burning or acid throwing, female genital
mutilation, dowry-related violence; violence in armed
conflict, such as murder and rape;
emotional abuse, such as coercion and abusive language.
Trafficking of women and girls for prostitution, forced
marriage, sexual harassment and intimidation at work
are additional examples of violence against women.
Gender –based violence

Gender violence occurs in both the ‘public’

and ‘private’ spheres. Such violence not only
occurs in the family and in the general
community, but is sometimes also perpetuated
by the state through policies or the actions of
agents of the state such as the police, military or
immigration authorities. Gender-based violence
happens in all societies, across all social classes,
with women particularly at risk from men they
know.
Gender and Development
seeks answers to
questions…….
1. Do you PROTECT YOUR
WOMEN FROM VIOLENCE?
2. Do you PROTECT YOUR
WOMEN'S RIGHT TO HEALTH?
3. Do you uphold the RIGHTS of
your WOMEN, CHILDREN,
YOUTH , PWD, AND YOUR
ELDERLY?
4. In your barangay, what do you
think are the programs and
services that upholds and protect
these rights?
The voice of a man can
shock and threaten a
WOMAN but the silence of a
woman tremendously shakes
the consciousness of MEN.
MEN control the world……and the
WOMEN control the men…
