ROLE OF PEDIATRIC NURSE

IN VARIOUS SETTINGS -
EXPANDED AND EXTENDED
INTRODUCTION
Expanded role of nursing means enlargement
of nurse role within the boundaries of nurse.

OR

Expanded role of nursing is the responsibility


assumed by a nurse within field of practice
autonomy.

Extended role of a nurse is the responsibility


assumed by a nurse beyond the traditional
role. It is the scope of nursing services outside
the hospital.
ROLE OF SCHOOL NURSE:
 School nurses need a working knowledge
of human growth and development.
 Need counselling skills.
 Keep records of children required
immunization.
 Work with teachers to improve the health
concepts into the curriculum.
 Conduct vision and hearing screens.
 Focus on preventive aspect of child health
PARISH NURSING
 Providing meals for families in crisis
or when they returning home after
hospitalization.
 Organizing prayer circles.
 Volunteering in community
acquired immunodeficiency
syndrome care groups.
 Holding regular grief support
groups.
STAFF NURSE
 Direct patient care
 Carry out the procedures of admission and
discharge of the patient.
 Maintains personal hygiene and comforts
of the patient.
 Attends to the personal needs of the patient
and feeds the helpless patient.
 Implements and maintains ward policies
and routines.
ROLE OF OT STAFF NURSE
 Operation theatre management
 Maintains aseptic environment of the
operation theatre.
 Autoclaving of articles, instruments,
gloves, linen etc. required for various
types of surgery.
 Receives patients from the ward intact for
surgery.
ROLE OF STAFF NURSE IN
MANAGEMENT OF LABOUR ROOM
 Preparation of expectant mother for
aseptic safe delivery.
 Conducts normal deliveries and reports.
 Attends and assists doctors in all
obstetrical emergencies.
 Takes care of newborn and premature
babies.
ROLE OF EDUCATOR NURSE:
 Helps in orientation of new staff and
students.
 Carries out health teaching for
individual or group of patients
 Participates in in-service education
programs.
 Assists and extends cooperation in
medical and nursing research
program.
SENIOR STAFF NURSE
 Direct patient care
 Ensures proper admission, discharge of
patients.
 She/he see that total health needs of his/her
patients are met.
 Takes nursing rounds with staff and
students.
 Makes rounds with doctors, assisting them
in diagnosis and treatment of patients.
ROLE OF SUPERVISION AND
ADMINISTRATION
 Makes duty and work assignments.
 Indenting and procurement of ward
supplies and equipment and keeps
records.
 Does regular inventory checking.
 Maintains discipline among the personnel
working in the particular ward.
 Patient care and ward/unit management
SENIOR STAFF NURSE AS A
MANAGER
 Reports about any medico legal cases in
the ward/unit
 Maintains good public relations in
his/her ward/unit.
 Ensures that students get desired
learning experience in the ward/unit.
 Arranges classes and clinical teaching of
nursing students in the department.
TEACHING DUTIES OF A NURSE:
 A nursing instructor assesses nursing
students, evaluating individual performance
and identifying key areas for improvement.
 A nursing instructor accurately documents
students' grades and their ability in clinical
settings.
 She/he also works closely with hospitals and
community health-care centers to ensure
that the curriculum adequately prepares
students for on-the-job requirements.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
 The main responsibility of a nursing
instructor is to teach students care
administration techniques, she/he also
educates students in the main tenets of
biology and the physical sciences.
 Typical topics covered by a nursing
instructor include human anatomy,
nutritional needs and chemistry, as

ROLE OF CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR
 Nursing instructors work in clinics,
classrooms, community colleges and
private health-care centers
 A nursing instructor trains nurses in the
fundamental aspects of care and
medicine required to work as a nurse
 She monitors students' progress and
ensures classes are taught within the
curriculum of the educational institution.
OTHER ROLE OF THE PEDIATRIC
NURSE-
1. Primary caregiver-

Pediatric nurse should provide preventive,


promotive, curative, and rehabilitative
care in all levels of health services, as
therapeutic agent. She /he acts as cases
finder and compassionate skilled caregiver
as needed by the today’s society.
Health Educator-

Important role of the pediatric nurse is to


deliver planned and incidental health
teaching and information to the parents,
significant others and children to create
awareness about healthy lifestyle and
maintenance of health.
Nurse Counselor-

Problem solving approach and necessary


guidance in health hazards of children to
minimize or to solve the problem and to
help the parents and family members for
independent decision-making in
different situation are essential role of
the pediatric nurse in the present health
care delivery system.
Social Worker-

Pediatric nurse can do case work


especially for children and try to
alleviate social problems related to
child health. She/he can participate in
available social support from the child
welfare agencies.
Team Coordinator And Collaborator-

Pediatric nurse should work together and


in combination with other health team
members towards better child health care.
She /he should acts as liaison among the
members and maintain good
interpersonal relationship.
Manager-

The pediatric nurse is the manager of


pediatric care unit in hospital, clinic and
community. She /he should organize the
care orderly for successful outcome with
better prognosis and good health.
Child Care Advocate-

Child or family advocacy is basic aspects


to comprehensive family centered care. As
an advocate, the pediatrics nurse can assist
the child to obtain best best care possible
from particular units. Advocacy can range
from consulting dietary department for
special foods to arrange team meeting to
discuss plan of care.
Recreationist-

This supportive role of pediatrics


nurse is important for the child to
adjust to the crisis imposed by illness
or hospitalization. She /he can
organize play facilities for recreation
and diversion for child’s emotional
outlet.
Nurse Consultant-

The pediatric nurse can act as


consultant to guide the parents and
family members for maintenance and
promotion of health and prevention of
childhood illness. The nurse can
promote self-care within the family
and prepare self-care agent for the
children who are unable to take care
of their own health.
Researcher-

Nursing research is an integral part of


professional nursing. Pediatric nurse
should participate or perform research
project s related to child health. Cultural
and applied research provide the basis for
changes in nursing practice and
improvement in the health care of
children.
