MACHINE
z

Milling
 Milling is the machining process of
removing materials using rotary cutters
from a work piece by advancing in a
direction at an angle with the axis of the
tool .
z

Milling Machine
 Milling machine are tools designed to
machine metal , wood and other solid
material .

 Milling machines can be positioned horizontal

or vertical orientation to carve out material
based on pre- existing design .
Milling machines are capable of
z
dynamic movement , both of tool
and work piece and can perform
multi – axis machining .
z
Tooling

 Milling machines can be outfitted with a

number of tool heads to accomplish different
machining needs .

 The different tooling used in milling machine

is based on material and desired shape .
z

 Some of these tool heads include :

 Cutters

 Rounding mills

 Fluted mills

 Ball end mills

Functions

 Boring

 Like machine gun

 Drilling

 Rimming

 Cutting

Types of milling machine

1. Knee type milling machine

2. Plain , vertical and horizontal milling

machine
3. Universal horizontal milling machine

4. CNC milling machine

z
Knee type milling machine

 Employ a vertical work piece supported by a

knee , which is an adjustable vertical casting .

 Knee supports a saddle and can be adjusted

to allow for a customized work piece.

Plain , vertical and horizontal type
milling machine

 Milling machine with a standard work piece can

be oriented vertically or horizontally.

 Tooling assembly is generally fixed on a turret

and swivel typically positioned parallel to work
piece.

 Turret and swivel allow the tool to move freely

around the work piece to enforce tight tolerance .
z

Universal horizontal type milling
machine

 Differs from plain horizontal type because it

has a table swivel housing which allows the
table to move out 45 degrees from standard
horizontal position.

 This work piece movement allows for easier

angular / helical milling operation .

CNC type milling machine

 Also machining center .

 With automatic tool changer , tool magazines

or carousels.

 Have CNC control , coolant system and

enclosure .

Precautions

 Don’t make contact with the revolving cutter .

 When installing or removing milling cutters ,

always hold them with a rag to prevent cutting
your hands .
 Never adjust work piece while machine is
operating.
 Shut the machine off before making any
adjustment.
