 X-rays were discovered in 1895 by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen.


 X-rays have been used in the art world to examine under-paintings.
 X-rays influenced medical treatments.
 The “x” in x-rays stands for “unknown”.
 The first x-ray was performed on Roentgen’s wife’s left hand, and she was not
impressed.
 Today, there are over 330,000 registered radiologic technologists.
 First use of radiation to treat cancer began in 1903.
 With the help of X-rays, scientists were able to see the double-helix structure
of DNA in the 1950s.
 Ultrasound was first used for clinical purposes in 1956.
 Radiation therapy became a specialized field in 1964.
 The first patient brain-scan done through CT scanning was performed in 1971.
 The first MR scan of the human body was performed in 1977.
 The first ever 3D mammography exam was performed in the U.S. in 2011.
 Nuclear medicine uses radiopharmaceuticals to emit gamma rays in the body to
provide functional information about organs, bone, and tissues.
 Bone densitometry is a modality in where the bone mineral density is measured
to diagnose and rule out osteoporosis.

on tables to promote National Radiologic Technology staff member put in their everyday work!

inform people of the type of modalities in the
radiology department.
Treats

We purchased snacks, and goodies to


give to the radiology department staff,
some of which are included in the photo
shown on the right. We had trays of
these goodies placed in the radiology
staff break rooms, and on a table in the
control room of the ER.
