FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM

• Fire safety equipment is the most important use as the preparation of

burning and helps to decrease any risk. In UTHM mosque the are many
fire system was installed. Example of fire detector are heat detector and
smoke detector that installed at reading space. Other than that, there
also have alarm system that functioning in fire bell. There also fire
suppression that use hose reel system as source of water and fire
extinguisher.
• Types of fire safety system
• Passive fire safety system
• Active fire safety system
• Fire suppression system
i. Passive Fire Safety System
• Passive Fire Protection includes
compartmentalization of the overall building
through the use of fire-resistance rated walls
and floors.
• In Masjid Sultan Ibrahim, UTHM it has
satisfied the specifications that JBPM set. For
example, in one building it must a least
contain two stairs but in Masjid Sultan
Ibrahim, UTHM it has five stairs around the
building. According to the JBPM the exit in
this building are accessible any time, the exit
is not blocked by any objects, and the width
of exit routes is uniform from start to end. For
the assembly room, this building use class A
for capacity that more than 1000 people, so it
must at least have four exit but this building
contains more 17 exits.
ii. Active Fire Safety System
• Fire Alarm System
• To detect and warn people through visual and audio
appliances when smoke, fire, carbon monoxide or other
emergencies are present
• They can also be speaker strobes which sound an alarm
• Smoke Detector System
• Smoke detector system is a device that senses the
presence of smoke in the building which typically as an
indicator of fire
• Basically, the smoke detector functioning when the
system detect smoke either in optically or by physically
process.
• Heat Detector System
• Heat detector system is a device that sense the presence
of increasing in temperature in the building which
typically as an indicator of fire. Heat detector are used
widely in public area or privet room
iii. Fire Suppression System

Hose reel system in Masjid Sultan Ibrahim, UTHM is

intended for the occupant to use during the early
stages of fire and comprises hose reel pumps, fire
water tank, hose reels, pipe work and valves. The hose
reel system generally serves as an initial fire fighting
aid. When the hose reel is brought into use the
pressure in the pipe immediately downstream of the
pump check valves will drops below the field adjusted
pressure setting of the pressure switch thereby
triggering the pump to comes into operation
automatically to feed a steady supply of water to
discharge through the hose.
Fire extinguisher consists of a hand-held cylindrical
Fire Protection System layout drawing at Masjid UTHM pressure vessel containing an agent which can be
discharged to extinguish a fire.
Ventilation is the intentional introduction of outside air into a space.
Ventilation is mainly used to control indoor air quality by diluting and
displacing indoor pollutants. It can also be used for purposes of
thermal comfort or dehumidification when the introduction of outside
air will help to achieve desired indoor psychometrics conditions. The
intentional introduction of outside air can be categorized as either
mechanical ventilation, or natural ventilation.
i. Natural ventilation
• Natural ventilation harnesses naturally available
forces to supply and remove air in an enclosed
space. There are two types of natural ventilation
occurring in buildings:
 wind driven ventilation.
Decoration wall with purpose for the ventilation
 stack ventilation. which allow the flows of air.

• Both of which are caused by naturally occurring

pressure differences. However, the pressure
differences that cause wind driven ventilation
uses the natural forces of the wind whereas
stack ventilation is caused by pressures
generated by buoyancy as a result in the
differences in temperature and humidity.
ii. Mechanical ventilation
• Natural ventilation alone can’t provide enough fresh air to
meet requirements and demands on Sultan Ibrahim
Mosque. Mechanical ventilation can help to supply
enough fresh air.
• Standard Ceiling fan
• Large ceiling fan
• Stand fan
• Air conditioner
• For the example, there are larger ceiling fan placed at
second floor that may produce large amount of air and
help to reduce cost in use of many fans. Also, there are a
row of table fan at the front space that increase the
acceptance of air. At the reading space first floor, there
were fill with ceiling fan to give comfort to the student.
• At the same time, the mosque also had many air
conditioning that placed near the wall and at the column.
The function is to control surrounding temperature,
humidity of air and comfort.
• Sound system is the other
important which also electrical
system that use especially during
Khutbah Jumaat. It makes the
communication can be heard
perfectly. There is six speakers
were use that located inside and
outside the building. All the
speaker was connected with
microphone as the input.
• There is different source of light
that use for lightning system in
this mosque. During daytime,
nothing use of light energy from
electrical system. The design
taking an advantage of sunlight to
light up the building. That is a
reason, the type of door was use Natural lightning from sunlight
is sliding glass door to allow the
transmitted of sunlight inside the
building.
• Besides, the design of ceiling
structure also using glass material
for lightning from above. The
white colour of inside building
indirectly give effect of lightning
and work as reflector. Lightning using electrical
